Social Skills & Orange Shirt Day

Yesterday we focused on the idea of having a peaceful classroom and that we can't control what other people say and do, we can only control how we react to it. So when someone is unkind to us, that does not mean we should be unkind back. We read a story called "Peace Week in Miss Fox's Class" and students have been eager to also have "peace week" in our classroom.

Today our principal, Ms. Rooke, came to visit our classroom and read some more stories with the students. She read "David Goes to School" and discussed personal responsibility with students. In other words, remembering only to worry about ourselves and our own actions, and letting Ms. Midgley handle the rest! She also read a story called "You Hold Me Up" and we thought of ways that we can hold each other up when we're at school.

Today we also started talking about Orange Shirt Day and Residential Schools. I was impressed with how much students already knew about this topic. It did come up in our conversation that some students who attended Residential Schools did not survive. We talked about needing proper food, water and care and that we can't survive without these basic needs. We tried not to focus too much on the idea of death but it was brought up in conversation and is briefly mentioned in some of the videos we watched. I wanted to share these resources for you to re-visit at home if you'd like! We also watched the first half of the show "Molly of Denali" which the kids LOVED and it teaches about Residential Schools in a very child-friendly way. We will continue talking about this for the rest of the week and throughout the year!

I'm unable to add the other video, but you can search "Canada Crew - First Nations" on Youtube if you're interested!
