Hello families!  I can't believe November is just about over! There are only 13 school days left until Winter Break (But who's counting...) This week we continued to talk a little bit about graphing. We watched a fun and silly video about superheroes and collected data from our class about favourite superheroes. We recorded the data as a class using tally marks and then students graphed the data using a bar graph.  We also played shape Bingo as a class to help review our 2D shapes. Students really enjoyed this activity! They also enjoyed using the geoboards to construct different 2D shapes. We also began learning about 3D shapes. On Thursday, we focused on learning about faces, edges and vertices. We learned about spheres and on Friday we learned about cylinders. Students determined the number of faces, edges and vertices for each shape and drew 3 or more items they know that are these shapes.  This week we also discussed long and short U sounds. Students in grade 1 drew 4 thin

Volunteers Needed - Freezer Feastival From School Council: Hello parents of Lake Bonavista School!      We need your help. Our Freezer Feastival fundraiser has been a success and now we need to get all the purchases into the vehicles! This Friday, November 27, we are in need of 6 more volunteers for curbside pick-up of orders. This will be done safely outside adhering to COVID-19 protocols. Happy Friday!  It was so nice to connect with so many families last night and today. If you are expecting a follow up email from me, I will try to get to it this weekend! I was pretty fully booked today and didn't end up with much time to follow up.  This week we have started exploring the question:  How do animals survive the winter? I was very impressed with students prior knowledge on this topic. We started by talking about the needs of animals and the needs of humans, and how our needs as humans change in the winter. We discussed needing warmer clothing, heating our homes, not spending as much time outside, and how some of our needs remain the same (ie. food, water, oxygen, etc.)  We then discussed What animals hibernate? and Where do animals hibernate? as well as how animals prepare for hibernation. Students really enjoyed acting as an animal preparing for and then hibernating as I travelled around the classroom trying to guess the animal they were pretending to be. I feel tha

Hello families,  This week we enjoyed continuing to learn about artist Georgia O'Keeffe and we created poppy art inspired by her painting "Oriental Poppies." Students used pastels for this art project. We learned about the importance of Remembrance Day and had a virtual assembly organized by the grade 5/6 classes on Tuesday. Oriental Poppies by Georgia O'Keeffe Students were also introduced to something we're calling a "Try Pad" last week. They have been using this to support them with their spelling. I love to encourage students to use phonetic spelling and to not get caught up in spelling everything perfectly, but this is a way for them to attempt spelling a word three times on their own before asking for help. There is one for each table to use and they have been working well so far. Students have also been completing a quick self-assessment with their writing tasks using our writing exemplars. We also had a lot of excitement with our hermit crabs th

Extra Blog Post - Hermit Crab Update

Image
Hello families,  I had to post an extra blog this week as we had an exciting discovery this morning! I noticed that our hermit crabs have been hiding out in their "coco hut" quite a lot. This morning I found the two larger hermit crabs outside of the hut, and what I believed to be a dead hermit crab torn apart inside the hut. I do not do well with these things, so Ms. Kassam came to my rescue and helped me dispose of the body. We checked all of the extra shells to make sure it didn't just find a new home - but did not see any signs of the third hermit crab.  I had a talk with the students about how the hermit crab had died and during work period we discovered that the little hermit crab had actually moved to a new shell (even though both Ms. Kassam and I did not see it.) So, I quickly went to fish the "dead body" out of the garbage - this is the crab's exoskeleton. In order to grow, they shed their exoskeleton and move into a larger shell. We were all very e

Hello families,  I hope you're all doing well!  I was home sick with a sore throat at the beginning of the week and students had Mrs. J instead. My test came back negative and I was feeling better so I returned on Wednesday!  While I was away, students participated in another listening activity, wrote about their Halloween weekend and learned about trapezoids and pentagons. Students also revisited the idea of growth mindset and wrote about 3 things they can do, and 1 thing they can't do... yet! Students also listened to the story "Beautiful Oops" and turned marks on their page into works of art!  On Wednesday, we learned about hexagons and where they are found in nature. Students reviewed the 5 types of taste and drew food items for each category. We also talked about the long and short I sound with the Animated Literacy character "Ike's Night Bike Ride." I definitely did not do a very good job with updated the Google Classroom, I apologize! Everyone was
