I was home sick with a sore throat at the beginning of the week and students had Mrs. J instead. My test came back negative and I was feeling better so I returned on Wednesday!
While I was away, students participated in another listening activity, wrote about their Halloween weekend and learned about trapezoids and pentagons. Students also revisited the idea of growth mindset and wrote about 3 things they can do, and 1 thing they can't do... yet! Students also listened to the story "Beautiful Oops" and turned marks on their page into works of art!
On Wednesday, we learned about hexagons and where they are found in nature. Students reviewed the 5 types of taste and drew food items for each category. We also talked about the long and short I sound with the Animated Literacy character "Ike's Night Bike Ride." I definitely did not do a very good job with updated the Google Classroom, I apologize! Everyone was here this week so I won't bother adding too much!
Outdoor Classroom Day
On Thursday we really enjoyed our Outdoor Classroom Day. We didn't get to do all the things we had planned, but the kids had a blast! We started the day with a smudge in the garden lead by Mrs. Green. She taught students about the tradition of smudging. Students did not have to participate in the smudge and were also given the option of doing a "Dry Smudge" where the sage is not lit.
We did our smudge with Buffalo Sage.
Students enjoyed having their snacks in the garden and then we had a surprise fire drill which unfortunately meant we did not have time for our community walk in the morning. Students went indoors for music class and we went back outside for PE afterwards. Students also spent some time digging in the dirt with magnifying classes to look for evidence of animal life.
In the afternoon we were battling the weather a little bit. Even though it was raining, we decided to go on a quick walk in the community to help teach students that you can have fun outdoors in all types of weather. I can't remember the last time I was out in the rain having fun - it was a nice change! We walked to a park nearby and students constructed different 2D shapes using the natural materials they could find on the ground. Here are a few!
Triangle
Heart
Trapezoid
Rhombus
3D Pyramid
Rectangle
Just kidding... but doesn't it remind you
a bit of the Blair Witch? 🤔
When we returned, we warmed up inside and talked about ovals for our shape of the day! It was then time to head back outside for recess. There was a beautiful sun shower and a huge rainbow at the end of recess. We spend the last bit of the afternoon indoors doing a big cubby clean up!
On Friday, we spent a little more time outside doing an activity that the weather interrupted on Thursday. Students were given the option to participate in another smudge. We also watched this video to review the importance of the smudge. Students then went on an outdoor 2D shape scavenger hunt!
We also started learning about artist Georgia O'Keeffe and next week we will create some poppy artwork inspired by her. We learned about her life a little bit and looked at a few of her paintings but we will continue to explore and discuss her artwork more next week.
Remembrance Day
Dear Parents,
Rooms 16 and 17 are hosting a virtual assembly for LBS students on November 10th at 10:40 am, in honour of Remembrance Day.
Did you know that every year from the last day of October until November 11th, tens of millions of Canadians wear a poppy as a visual pledge to honour Canada's veterans and remember those who sacrificed for the freedoms that we enjoy today.
Students will be given a poppy on November 10th and can give a donation at the school office. If you would like to support out local veterans, the Legion is encouraging people to donate online this year. Please follow the link:https://legion.ca/donations to donate to the Legion's Poppy Fund.
Thank you from Ms. Mumford & Ms. Burnham's students.

Hello families, We made it through our first (almost) full week of school! We are focusing a lot on learning expectations and building classroom community. We’ve been enjoying starting each day in circle getting to know our classmates. The pictures will be a little limited for the first few weeks until we have photo release information! This week we talked a lot about carpet expectations. We read a story called “Whole-Body Listening at School” and learned about Listening Larry. Ask your child how many parts of our body we can listen with… it’s not just our ears. You can also follow up with “Whole Body Listening at Home” if this is something you are working on at home as well! I also like to use my cat, Eli, to show carpet expectations! Whole Body Listening at Home This week we started some introduction lessons to the UFLI literacy program. We’ve been learning how our mouth moves in different ways to make different sounds. We also started learning about “sky, grass, dirt” letters
Hello families, We had a very busy week getting ready for our winter concert and our Calgary Humane Society fundraiser! Students love baking and packaging treats, making posters, and some students were even challenged to learn how to curl the ribbon! On Friday we used our skip counting skills to count up all the money we've raised so far. We've raised $666.85 and are hoping to break our record of $700 from last year! All of this work is connected to our health and wellness curriculum (volunteerism), social studies, science, art, math and literacy! Wow! Math In math we've been continuing to work with number bonds. This week students learned how to determine the missing number in a number bond when given the whole and one of the parts. This is a pre-cursor to subtraction! We used manipulatives and drawings to help us with this work! We also re-invented our Spider Legs math game to make it Christmas themed! Instead of drawing a spider and adding legs, students used a tree an
Hello families! We had a great first week of school! I have a goal this year to be a little more concise with my blog posts. We'll see how it goes! This week we spent some time getting to know each other. We learned about sharing circles and have started both mornings in circle getting to know more about one another. We are learning the importance of listening to each other and giving everyone a chance to speak. We also read the story "You're Finally Here" by Melanie Watt. We enjoyed re-creating the main character of the story. It was great to see students' cutting skills and their ability to follow each step of the activity. We talked about how the eyebrows can convey different feelings and can really change the bunny's expression. On Friday we learned a math game called "What's My Number?" we played teacher versus students and they beat me! Next week, students will play the game with their classmates.
