Nov. 23-27

Hello families!

I can't believe November is just about over! There are only 13 school days left until Winter Break (But who's counting...)

This week we continued to talk a little bit about graphing. We watched a fun and silly video about superheroes and collected data from our class about favourite superheroes. We recorded the data as a class using tally marks and then students graphed the data using a bar graph.

We also played shape Bingo as a class to help review our 2D shapes. Students really enjoyed this activity! They also enjoyed using the geoboards to construct different 2D shapes. We also began learning about 3D shapes. On Thursday, we focused on learning about faces, edges and vertices. We learned about spheres and on Friday we learned about cylinders. Students determined the number of faces, edges and vertices for each shape and drew 3 or more items they know that are these shapes.

This week we also discussed long and short U sounds. Students in grade 1 drew 4 things with the short U sound and 4 with the long U sound. Grade 2 students did the same but attempted to spell the words as well using the vowel combinations we discussed - UE and U_E. Next week we will start looking at blends and digraphs.

We also continued to explore: How do animals survive the winter? We discussed and learned about what makes a good shelter for humans and animals. Students followed the step-by-step instructions to create a bear cave. We also talked about insulation and materials that are used to keep the heat in. Students were introduced to a building project that will start on Tuesday next week. Students designed a habitat that would keep an egg safe and warm outside next week. Please see the email sent regarding this project and send materials for Monday if you are able!

We compared my two drink containers and discussed why one works better for keeping coffee hot!

Here are (almost) all of the student's shelter designs!

During our Daily 5 literacy time this week, I worked with the "Word Work" group each day on a Boggle activity. We used the letters and the moveable alphabet to construct words and recorded them in a chart.
