March Break!!

Image
Hello everyone, Thank you so much to everyone who was able to make it to Student-Led Conferences the past two days. It was so awesome to see how excited the students were to share their work. Please know that I am always around to answer questions or meet outside of conference times if you ever have any concerns. I hope everyone has a restful March Break!

Tuesday

Hello families, We have been working hard today on our math work! This afternoon students will have music and I am hoping to do an outside activity about seasonal changes at the end of the day because it is just SO beautiful outside! I am still looking for some support with painting tomorrow. If you are available at any time throughout the day tomorrow I would really appreciate some help. Please send me an email if you are interested! Scholastic Orders are coming home today. They will be due Tuesday, April 2nd. Tomorrow we are wearing green for the first day of Spring!  ☼ ☼ ☼

Hello everyone! This morning we had library and enjoyed PE outside since there was a sharing assembly during our PE time. We then chose our weekly words from the "-amp" family and went to the gym to see the "sharing assembly" which was more like a museum of sharing in the gym. The grade 3/4 classes shared some awesome work! In the afternoon we had our literacy groups with Ms. Kassam where we continued choosing our Weekly Words and started working on a math task that students will be sharing during this week's Student-Led Conferences. We have been working a lot on skip counting and number patterns. In grade 1, students are expected to: - Count by 1s forward between any two given numbers - Count by 1s backwards from 20 to 0 - Count by 2s forward from 0-20 - Count by 5s and 10s forward from 0 to 100 In grade 2, students are expected to: - Count by 2s, 5s, and 10s, forward and backward, using starting points that are multiples of 2, 5, and 10 respect

Hello families, Today we started our morning with some painting with Ms. Grant. The students were very careful and did an awesome job mixing "dreamy" colours. We will need some more time next week to continue painting. We then had a snack and went outside for PE. During work period, students either practiced their weekly words or did a spelling quiz with a partner and were able to choose a free choice activity when they were finished. We then had another quick snack and went to our colour groups. In our colour groups, students painted on a large canvas with black paint using either a paint brush or string. Music played over the announcements and they were to paint in a way the music made them feel or paint something that the music made them think of. It was a day full of painting! We were missing 5 students from our classroom today so I chose to hold off our discussion about the ways to represent 24 until Monday. Announcing LBS School Council’s Spring Fundraiser!

Thursday

Hello everyone, This morning we had music and enjoyed gym outside. We are excited to get back in the gym once Alien In-Line is over next week... unless there is some beautiful weather that we need to enjoy! 🌞During work period, we worked on the good copies of our Dream Art and practiced our weekly words. In the afternoon we had our literacy group where we focused in on punctuation. The kids LOVED this video about different punctuation - they thought it was hilarious. We read a passage about the colour green and did different actions for every punctuation mark we saw. I printed too many copies of the green passage so some students brought it home to share with their families and teach them the actions. I got the passage from this website (just to give them credit!) We then went over some of the ways that we were able to represent 13. Students were then given the challenge to make the number 24 using as many different ways as possible. Next week, students will be exploring their o

Hello everyone, This morning we enjoyed Explore and Play and talked about the number 13. Students were asked to make the number 13 in as many ways as they could. We then had daily 5, snack, guest reader and math centres. Before lunch we enjoyed our last In-line Skating session. We've been talking about skip counting in connection to number patterns and the students have been enjoying these short little videos about skip counting by 2, 5s, and 10s. There's also a Jack Hartmann skip counting video... I'm honestly not sure how this guy is so successful. Counting by 2 Counting by 5 Counting by 10 Jack Hartmann In the afternoon we used the editing checklist that we created yesterday as a class to edit our writing. Some grade 2 students from Miss Ireland's class helped with the editing. We then had some work period time to practice our words and begin our good copies of our Salvador Dali art. Don't forget to sign up for Student-Led Conferences! Please let me

Tuesday

Hello everyone, This morning we had daily 5 and went outside for PE. Tomorrow we will be having our last day of Aline In-Line skating. During work period, we continued to work on our art, words, and number patterns. Tomorrow we will be starting the good copy of our art. In the afternoon we had a bit of a rough time with mindful minutes. We spent some time chatting with Ms. Kassam about the importance of listening in the classroom and being respectful of each others' time and space. I think she could tell that I am feeling tired from repeating myself so much. Sometimes, it just helps to have it come from somebody else! We talked a lot about how if we are choosing to be silly during work period or loud and during mindful minutes, we are not only making poor choices for ourselves but also interfering with our classmates' work time and mindfulness time. It is a work in progress! 😅 Student-Led Conferences Don't forget to sign up for a student-led conference time for next

Hello families! This morning we had library and snack and then went outside for PE. I was expecting a little more sunshine today! During work period, we chose our weekly words. This week we are doing St. Patrick's Day themed words. We also continued working on our dream art and number patterns. Students will not be bringing home a paper copy of their weekly words but they should be able to tell you which colour list they chose. 🍀🍀🍀 Blue List: gold, cold, wish, Irish, green, seen, luck, buck Green List: gold Irish, green, lucky, March, snakes, clover, Ireland Orange List: Ireland, shamrock, holiday, parade, rainbow, treasure, leprechaun, St. Patrick 🍀🍀🍀 I worked with each student on their dream art planning. If you did not get a chance to talk to your child this weekend about their dream, please make sure to do so tonight! It will really help to give them a focus for their art. In the afternoon we were joined by Miss Ireland's grade 2s while her grade 1s

Friday

Hello families and happy Friday! This morning we worked with Ms. Grant on our Salvador Dali art. It is quite abstract and is definitely a challenge for some of our students! I don't want to give too much away as we are hoping this inquiry will be a big focus for our upcoming student-led conferences. Students need to choose one dream from their "dream books," so either a dream they have for themselves, their school, their city, province or country. We are hoping for dreams that are a little more substantial and realistic ie. not a dream that unicorns would be in Alberta or a dream to have a new toy. They then need to incorporate a geographical feature of Alberta (ie. the mountains) as well as a symbol of Calgary or Alberta (Calgary Tower, flames, wild rose, petrified wood, maple leaf, etc.) Just like Salvador Dali, they will be changing these symbols into something else to represent their dreams. For example, Ms. Grant's dream was for Calgary to get a new library (be

Hello everyone, Today we had Explore and Play and started our day off with Good Morning Yoga. Students then went to music. During snack we watched a video about 2-D shapes and then we had guest reader. We went outside for PE and during work period we worked on our weekly words, pattern snakes, and dream books. If students were all done their "must-dos," I gave them a shape pattern review/intro to number patterns task as an assessment to see if we are ready to move on to patterns in numbers. In the afternoon, we had our literacy groups and talked about when to use capital letters and got together with our buddy class to finish up our maps of the school. Tomorrow we will have a busy day - in the morning we will be joined by Ms. Grant to continue working on our Salvador Dali art and we will have Alien Inline. Swimming We are beginning to plan for our spring swimming sessions at the Trico Centre. The schedule is not finalized however it looks like we will be leaving the s

Hello families, Today we had Daily 5 literacy and a quick Work Period where we practiced our weekly words and finished up our pattern snakes. We then went to our first Alien In-Line skating session. We definitely needed the volunteers we had - if anyone else is interested in joining us on Friday or next Wednesday, please let me know. In the afternoon, we had our literacy groups where we shared our writing that focused on using voice. We then started talking about our dreams for Alberta. We re-watched the Canada 150 video about Alberta and discussed some of the things we think are awesome in Alberta. We worked on this for a little before and after recess. It was definitely a big concept for our class. We talked about some of the things that are important to Alberta such as the Rocky Mountains and Beautiful blue lakes, Banff, the weather, etc. We also briefly talked about the pipeline and how we either build a pipeline to help with jobs and the economy or we don't because of

Hello everyone! Today we had daily 5 literacy in the morning and during work period we practiced our Weekly Words and created our pattern snakes. We then had guest reader and did PE in our classroom. We did a Go Noodle and played a game. In the afternoon, we had our literacy groups and continued working on using "voice" in writing. Students then went to music. Hello families, This morning we had library and after snack we went outside with Miss Ireland's class for PE. Alien-In Line skating has started and on the days that we do not skate we will either be going outside or doing PE in the classroom. Please see your emails for more info and reminders about In-Line skating! This week we choose our Weekly Words from the "-and" family. In the afternoon, because Ms. Kassam was away and the sight of our cubbies was seriously scary, we did a cubby clean out. We then started a patterning art project where students are creating pattern snakes. We started with some design ideas and will be creating the snakes tomorrow during work period. At the very end of the day we had guest reader. Tomorrow we will continue on with our pattern snakes and we will be bringing our designs to life!
