Monday

Hi everyone! We had a busy day today! This morning we did Explore and Play and spelling and then we had a Music Monday assembly from Evergreen Theatre. We also had library and gym outdoors. In the afternoon we had music and at the end of the day we got together with Miss Ireland and Mr. Link's classes to discuss our June 14th assembly. Blue List: hopped, stopped, shopped, dropped, skipped, planned, begged, hugged Green List: rode, wrote, spoke, heard, found, taught, brought, thought Please remember that we will be swimming tomorrow afternoon! I also sent home a form for Australian Football that will be starting next week. These forms need to be returned by Friday. After a few weeks of feeling under the weather I've been advised to stay home and will likely have a substitute teacher in for me tomorrow!

Friday

Hi everyone, This morning we had an extended Explore and Play time where some students were able to get caught up on their work. We then did Daily 5 literacy and during work period we continued with our measurement activity from yesterday and we were looking at some new shapes. The Grade 1s were looking at octagons and the Grade 2s were looking at triangular based pyramids. We also had our spelling quiz and played handball in gym. In the afternoon we spent some time doing math. The class was split in two and one group had a math lesson on the carpet while the other group played some Prodigy. In our math lessons we reviewed the importance of lining up numbers when adding and reviewed place value. With the other group, we also reviewed place value and talked about adding and subtracting with regrouping using the golden beads. At the end of the day we enjoyed some free choice!

Wednesday

Hi Everyone, This morning we had daily 5 literacy and during snack we watched Zoboomafo. I thought since the kids love Wild Kratts so much, they might enjoy watching the show that I used to watch with the same people. They loved it, of course, and learned about some different animals that swim and the adaptations that help them to swim. During work period we were working on spelling, writing, days and weeks and our shapes from yesterday. We also moved on to editing our work. I am amazed at the improvement I have seen in the students' writing! For gym we enjoyed some time outside - the weather is just too nice not too! We will be continuing with handball on Friday though. In the afternoon we had guest reader and started talking about measurement. In Grade 1 and 2 we use "non-standard" units of measurement. We talked about different objects we could use to measure. We practiced by estimating how many feet (actual human feet) it would take to walk around the playground

Tuesday

Hello everyone, I hope you all had a restful long weekend! This morning we went to library and after snack we spent a little bit of time playing outside enjoying the fresh air. Students are used to having gym in the morning time and not such a long work period so I felt this would help break up our morning a bit and is in lieu of afternoon recess. During work period, students were working on spelling, writing, days and months math, and shape math. For writing, students could choose between writing a weekend journal or responding to the writing prompt.... "My parents told me when I get home they have a BIG surprise for me. I really hope the surprise is..." We will be editing our writing tomorrow. Grade 1s were working with pentagons and Grade 2s were working with triangular prisms. Blue Words: cold, card, cake, cook, candle, carrot, castle, cowboy (hard C sound) Green Words: fixed, played, enjoyed, watched, walked, wanted, needed, showed ("ed" words) In th

Hi Everyone! Today we skipped over Daily literacy to allow for some more work period time. We were finishing up our writing, responsibility charts (responsibilities at home, at school, to the environment, and to ourselves), and we talked about some new shapes. The Grade 1s were looking for rhombus shaped items and the Grade 2s were looking for pyramids! We enjoyed gym time outside and had an assembly before lunch where some of our Grade 3/4 classes were sharing their learning. We are excited to have our sharing assembly on Thursday, June 14th at 1pm!  In the afternoon we had guest reader and continued building our boats. Tomorrow students will have their Explore and Play time to finish up their boats and we will be testing them out in the morning. After recess, we talked about some of our expectations for swimming tomorrow afternoon as part of our discussion about responsibility. We discussed being appropriate and not silly in the change rooms as well as ways to be safe. We talked

Hi Everyone!  This morning we did Daily 5 literacy and had a short work period time where students were working on spelling and writing. Students had the option between writing a weekend journal or writing about what job they would like to do when they grow up. They were reminded of the writing expectations for Grade 1 and 2 students. After writing, students used the editing checklist to self-edit their work. During library and gym, the students worked with a substitute teacher for awhile and enjoyed their gym time outdoors. Here are our spelling words for this week:  Blue List: bow, low, show, grow, flow, throw, below, rainbow Green List: cent, celery, circle, dance, price, cylinder, celebrate, bicycle  In the afternoon we did guest reader and started talking about boats and buoyancy. We talked about different materials that we know float (are buoyant) and are waterproof. We drew diagrams of our boat designs. We are going to be building our boats tomorrow afternoon and Wednes

Hello everyone! Today we had some extra work period time in the morning instead of doing Daily 5 literacy. We needed some extra time to finish up our Mothers' Day activity. We also talked about "fact families" in Grade 1 and the Grade 2s worked on a "Number Detective" activity. We also did some work with rectangles and rectangular prisms. In gym, we continued with our Handball tournament. In the afternoon we had guest reader and our spelling quiz. We also did a very fun cup stacking activity where students had to work together to make a pyramid only using an elastic and strings to move the cups. At the end of the day we had a bit of free choice time and watched some Wild Kratts while we enjoyed some birthday brownies. I hope all of the moms have a lovely Mothers' Day on Sunday!! Have a great weekend!

Hi Everyone, This morning we had daily 5 literacy and work period. During work period we continued working on our Mothers' Day Activity, writing and spelling. During gym we had our first day of our "Canadian Handball" tournament. We had a few issues with sportsmanship and honesty about scores as well as listening in the gym. After lunch we talked about editing our own writing and created a checklist to use each time we write. At the end of the day, instead of doing the fun teamwork activity we had planned, we came together with Mr. Link's class and revisited the idea of respect and how important respect is when it comes to teamwork. We are going to give "Canadian Handball" another try tomorrow.  Thank you so much for all of our awesome dads for offering to volunteer! We are anticipating a much more successful swimming experience with more supervision!  The May Scholastic Orders will be placed on Friday. Please return your forms or order onl

Hello everyone! This morning instead of doing daily 5 literacy we took this time to work on our chick booklets. We talked about the different parts of a chicken and discussed some interesting facts and adaptations of chickens. During our short work period, students worked on spelling and finishing up their shape work with circles/spheres. We then went to Miss Ireland's classroom and took a look at some interesting pictures. The students were asked to share one word that comes to mind when they see the picture. Miss Ireland only wrote down certain words and students had to figure out what type of words were being recorded. It was determined that all of the words were adjectives. We then went outside for gym - we will have netball again tomorrow! In the afternoon we did guest reader and talked about some more oviparous animals. We watched a video of a stingray being born from a "mermaid purse" and a flamingo being hatched. We then got together with Miss Ireland's cl

Hi everyone! This morning we had music. During work period we started talking about 2D and 3D shapes. Every day we will be talking about 1 2D shape (grade 1s) and 1 3D shape (grade 2s). Today we talked about circles and spheres and found 4 things that are these shapes. We talked about faces, edges, and vertices. For gym we went outside as the gym is being used for netball. Our next netball lesson is Thursday and the last one will be Monday. In the afternoon, we talked about mental health. Tomorrow will be Hats on for Mental Health Day.  Here are the videos we watched regarding mental health. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jf13seh1_2Y  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nCrjevx3-Js&t=143s  We then had some "Genius Hour" time where students got to study a topic of their choice. At the very end of the day we watched a Muppets video and an Arthur video about honesty. Please disregard the swimming forms that were sent home today - new ones will be sent home tomorrow.
