Hello families & Happy Holidays!  I can't believe it is already Winter Break - it feels like we just started school. Every year seems to go by faster and faster.  The blog might actually be a bit shorter this week as we were up to some top secret Christmas present making that I won't share any details about! But, students did enjoy making some Christmas gifts for families and it took a good chunk of our week! This week, we talked about punctuation as I noticed a lot of missing or excessive punctuation in some students' writing journals. We reviewed different types of punctuation and when to use them. Students were also given the beginning to a piece of writing about a bear which we critiqued. Students were then asked to improve the writing and drawing. Students often have a hard time finding ways to improve their own work, but are very quick to see how they can improve someone else's work.  This week we also continued talking about animal adaptations for winter! Hello families!  This week students were so excited to test their egg shelters! On Monday morning students put eggs in their shelter and found a place in the garden for their shelter to sit for 3 days. We only had a couple of casualties! On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon, students observed their shelters and made observations about how their egg and/or shelter were doing in their observation journals. I was excited when it snowed on Tuesday night and we were all eager to see how the shelters held up. If you haven't seen them yet, there is a photo of each child with their shelter on Google Classroom - I will also add their reflections! We also learned about migration and different animals that migrate. We played a "Hibernate or Migrate" game and students received books where they drew an animal's habitat and decided whether they hibernated or migrated.  On Friday, we also began talking about adaptations and will continue with this next week! We started by read

Hello families,  Happy December! Please remember to complete and return the "Family Interview Homework" for Monday! Here are the 5 questions in case your sheet didn't make it home.  1. Where does our family come from? What is our culture? 2. What does your name mean? (or who are you named after?) 3. What is important to our family? (languages, traditions, celebrations, values, etc.) 4. What groups do I belong to? (i.e. sports teams, Beavers/Sparks, etc.) 5. How does your family contribute to the community? (volunteerism, events attended, etc.) Thank you for your support with this!  This week, we started off by talking about active listening. Students took turns in partners talking about what they did on the weekend and then had to share about their partner's weekend. This also helped students generate ideas for their weekend journals. We talked about whole body listening, eye contact and body language.  In math, we continued talking about 3D shapes. We learned about c

Hello families!  I can't believe November is just about over! There are only 13 school days left until Winter Break (But who's counting...) This week we continued to talk a little bit about graphing. We watched a fun and silly video about superheroes and collected data from our class about favourite superheroes. We recorded the data as a class using tally marks and then students graphed the data using a bar graph.  We also played shape Bingo as a class to help review our 2D shapes. Students really enjoyed this activity! They also enjoyed using the geoboards to construct different 2D shapes. We also began learning about 3D shapes. On Thursday, we focused on learning about faces, edges and vertices. We learned about spheres and on Friday we learned about cylinders. Students determined the number of faces, edges and vertices for each shape and drew 3 or more items they know that are these shapes.  This week we also discussed long and short U sounds. Students in grade 1 drew 4 thin
