Dec. 7-11

Hello families!

This week students were so excited to test their egg shelters! On Monday morning students put eggs in their shelter and found a place in the garden for their shelter to sit for 3 days. We only had a couple of casualties! On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon, students observed their shelters and made observations about how their egg and/or shelter were doing in their observation journals. I was excited when it snowed on Tuesday night and we were all eager to see how the shelters held up. If you haven't seen them yet, there is a photo of each child with their shelter on Google Classroom - I will also add their reflections!

We also learned about migration and different animals that migrate. We played a "Hibernate or Migrate" game and students received books where they drew an animal's habitat and decided whether they hibernated or migrated.

On Friday, we also began talking about adaptations and will continue with this next week! We started by reading the story "What Do Critters Do in the Winter?" and we watched a video about animal's winter coats.

This week we used the home interviews for an identity art project. I can't share photos on the blog as each child's face is in the artwork, but I will share them on Google Classroom! They turned out beautifully. We will continue discussing culture and identity next week. Here are some photos of students painting their backgrounds however they wanted with water colours.

This week we also reviewed the "sh" sound and learned about the "ch" sound. Students had a good laugh at the Kids Vs. Phonics video. The character for "CH" - Chauncy Chipmunk - is on Google Classroom.

We continued practicing addition but didn't quite get to discussing and learning strategies for addition (it was a busy week!) Students also practiced making numbers using ones, tens and hundreds with numbers that were at their readiness level. We only got to one 3D shape this week which was a square-based pyramid.

We put our Gratitude Journals on hold this week as students were already completing a lot of writing tasks. We did one prompt today which was: What sport are you grateful for and why?

This week we also started (and almost finished) Junie B. Jones is Not a Crook.

Today we enjoyed snowshoeing! Many students had never tried snowshoeing before (and some had never even heard of it!) It was a bit cold but we enjoyed nonetheless. Since I can't share student faces on the blog, here are some of our snowshoes!
