Hi families,  I apologize for the late blog post! Here's what we were up to last week. We had lots of special days to celebrate!  On Tuesday we had our Pink Shirt Day Assembly. The students really enjoyed sharing about kindness and Pink Shirt Day. We also celebrated "Twosday."  Throughout the week we were working on the "-at" word family during Daily 5 groups and we learned a poem called The Fat Cat. Students then visualized what they saw when reading the poem and drew a picture. They brought this home to share with you! We will be doing a new poem and new word family for the next little bit so you can expect to get a new poem each week! Working on rhyming skills at home is great practice for reading and word families as well! Seeing if children can match rhymes or generate their own rhymes is important!  This week we also celebrated Pink Shirt Day on Wednesday and Beach Day on Thursday. For beach day we learned about acrostic poems and students made their own b

Beach Day is tomorrow!  FITNESS BINGO AT LBS!   All of the classes at Lake Bonavista School are participating in a fitness bingo challenge from February 23-April 8! We wanted to share the bingo card with you so you can continue the fun at home! At school, each time a class completes a ‘blackout’ bingo card, they will be added to a draw and entered to win bonus recess time! If your family complete all of the exercises on a bingo card at your house, please notify your classroom teacher and your child’s class will receive an additional entry in the draw.   Each exercise on the bingo card is to be completed in an interval style - 20 seconds of the exercise, followed by 10 seconds of rest. In order to cross the activity off of your bingo card you must complete a minimum of 4 interval sets. If some of the exercises are unfamiliar, please ask your child to teach you the movement.   Feel free to check out the video below for a further explanation of the bingo challenge. https://youtu.be/ejIjfW

Hi Families,  We had another busy week - the energy was VERY high in grade one!  Here are a few updates before we get into what's been happening in the classroom this week.  Valentine's Day On Monday we will be celebrating Valentine's Day. We decided to do a "Secret Valentines Swap" where students randomly picked the name of a classmate to make a special valentine for. They needed to include something the person likes (favourite colour, animal, food or activity) and write a kind message to share something they like about this person. The secret keeping part was definitely a challenge but I was really proud of how hard the kids worked on their cards and how much thought went into them. If your child was away, they will still receive a Valentine in Monday... don't worry!  Please remember that Valentine's cards and treats should not be brought from home on Monday!  Loose Part Donations are ongoing, and meant for future use. All donations will be quarantined o

Hello families,  We had a very busy short week!  In math, we started talking about 3D objects. We learned about the difference between 2D shapes and 3D objects and the students really enjoyed this video. We will continue our learning with 3D objects next week!  This week we also talked a little bit about estimation. Students had to estimate how many plastic bricks were in a glass using 4 clues. By the end we knew our number had to be greater than 20, less than 50, it was even and had the digit 6. Most students by the end estimated 26 or 36, but no one chose 46 because they felt that was too many. The students really enjoyed this activity so we will definitely be doing it again!  Students enjoyed learning about The Chinese/Lunar New Year this week as well! We learned a little about the history of the new year and read some stories. We will continue talking about this next week too!  This week we also celebrated Groundhog Day. The students shared their preference for early spring or more
