Feb 1-4

Hello families,

We had a very busy short week!

In math, we started talking about 3D objects. We learned about the difference between 2D shapes and 3D objects and the students really enjoyed this video. We will continue our learning with 3D objects next week!

This week we also talked a little bit about estimation. Students had to estimate how many plastic bricks were in a glass using 4 clues. By the end we knew our number had to be greater than 20, less than 50, it was even and had the digit 6. Most students by the end estimated 26 or 36, but no one chose 46 because they felt that was too many. The students really enjoyed this activity so we will definitely be doing it again!

Students enjoyed learning about The Chinese/Lunar New Year this week as well! We learned a little about the history of the new year and read some stories. We will continue talking about this next week too!

This week we also celebrated Groundhog Day. The students shared their preference for early spring or more winter (16-0) and made their predictions on whether Balzac Billy would see his shadow. Needless to say, we were pretty disappointed that he saw his shadow!

In science, we have finished learning about animal adaptations in winter and we are moving in to our final project! Students will be creating dioramas using the following criteria. We started with a sketch to plan the work and painted the backgrounds this week. Next week the students will be creating their animals from plasticine and using other building materials to add details. The images below are from Mrs. Ps class - for students that were away this week, you could plan your project at home and complete it with us in class next week. And for students that are away next week, you could complete this at home if you're interested!

This week we also started talking about our upcoming assembly for Pink Shirt Day. Mrs. Green has been away on medical leave for almost a year now but is slowly returning to room 10 and will become the room 10 teacher this spring. So right now we are lucky to have both Mrs. Proctor and Mrs. Green around! Mrs. Green visited our classroom to talk to the students about the assembly and read the stories about being a "bucket filler." We brainstormed ways to show kindness to one another and how to use active listening in our groups when sharing ideas.

Our assembly will be a pre-recorded video that is shared virtually with the whole school. We have asked students to share whether they would like a speaking part or just an "acting" part in the assembly.

Valentine's Day

Again this year, students will not be permitted to bring Valentine's Day cards from home. We also are still not allowed to have shared snacks in the classroom. We will find other ways to show our appreciation for each other this Valentine's Day! I am thinking we may do a secret Valentine exchange within the class if students are interested.
