September 20-23

Hello families!

We had a lot going on this week! This week we learned about Terry Fox, celebrated the first day of fall and the International Day of Peace!

Literacy

This week we talked about the letter 'O' with the character Dr. Ollie Ostrich. We started doing our Daily 5 Literacy rotations and students completed each activity once throughout the week.

Math

This week we worked on some number recognition! Students enjoyed rolling dice, adding up the dots, and colouring in the matching number. We also started focusing in on the number five and began learning about tally marks and even and odd numbers. We will continue with this next week!

Science

In science we are talking about a few different things! We began talking about seasonal changes with the first day of fall. We read the story "Leaf Man" and made our own leaf artwork. Here are a few!

For International Peace Day we talked about the 5 Senses and the different smells, sounds, etc. that bring us peace.

We also continued talking about colour mixing and learned about tints and shades. We are painting some ice cream cones with tints and shades but didn't quite finish yet so I will share photos next week!

Social Studies

This week we finished our "All About Me" backpacks! Our week was full of current events such as the International Day of Peace and Terry Fox. Students enjoyed learning more about Terry Fox. We watched some videos and listened to the story "Terry and Me." We made a "scrapbook style" page in our sketch books about Terry Fox and included a map of Canada, a photo of Terry, the Canadian Flag and students did a rubbing of their shoe and cut it out.

Next week is Truth and Reconciliation Week and we will be discussing Orange Shirt Day and Residential Schools at an age appropriate level. Our LBS Orange Shirt Day will be Wednesday, September 29th.

This week we had our first visit to the Learning Commons (Library). Students were able to choose two books each. For now, books can only stay in the classroom and cannot be brought home. Hopefully later this year students will have the opportunity to bring books home. Our usual library day will be Wednesdays!

As I have mentioned, we have had some trouble in the classroom with treating each other with kindness and making safe choices. Next week we will be looking at "Kelso's Choices" to help teach students different ways to handle their problems. We have not started talking about this yet!
