 Terry Fox Run 2021

We will be having our Annual Terry Fox Run on Wednesday, September 22, 2021Teachers will be discussing with students the life of Terry Fox and the contributions he has made to cancer research as well as coming together in the afternoon for a virtual wrap up assembly.  Students are encouraged to wear blue/white/ or their school t-shirt on this day.

Students can dedicate their run to someone who they know has been affected by cancer. Please speak to your child prior to our run and if they choose to dedicate their run to someone, they can share this in their class sharing circle prior to or after their run.

Should you wish to make a donation online, please use the following link to donate through the Terry Fox website:

Let’s keep Terry’s dream to find a cure for cancer alive!

Hello families,

We had another great week in room 11! We have been focusing on kindness towards ourselves and others and this week we focused on appropriate voice levels for each activity in the classroom. We had a good talk about treating each other with kindness and created a classroom contract where students signed and agreed to be kind, be safe, and try their best. We've been using this language a lot this week - is what your doing kind? Is it safe? What could you try next time that would be safer? Did you try your best on this activity or did you rush? etc.

Literacy

This week we focused on the letter 'U' with the character Uncle Upton. Students practiced building and writing the letter 'U.' With the letters P and U students can now spell 'up' and 'pup.' We watched some videos and read some stories about the letter U. We also continued to practice "Read to Self" and "Buddy Reading." Next week we will start all of our Daily 5 Literacy activities in small groups (read to self, buddy reading, listen to reading, word work, and work on writing). Please send headphones labelled with your child's name to keep at school for Listen to Reading!

For International Dot Day, we listened to the story "Not Just a Dot" and students wrote, using the sentence starter - "it's not just a dot, it's a _______" and used their imaginations to turn a dot sticker into something new.

Math

In math we have been continuing to talk about patterns! We have learned about colour, size and shapes patterns and using pattern rules to describe our patterns (AB, ABC, ABB, etc) Students had to draw their own size, shape and colour patterns. They also worked with a partner taking turns to create patterns and determining the pattern rule and extending the pattern.

Social Studies

In social studies we are continuing to learn about ourselves and our identities with our "All About Me" backpacks. We just have a few activities left and then we will be done! Next week we will be discussing International Day of Peace and Terry Fox.

Science

This week we had a lot of fun with mixing colours! We used a colour wheel and paint to make secondary colours. We also talked about warm and cool colours with the idea of "hot dog and cool cat." We did step by step drawings as a class and students used water colour paints to paint their dog warm colours, and their cat cool colours. Ms. Gierl and Ms. Mumford's grade 4/5 classes were kind enough to make us some playdoh in the primary colours. We then used this for colour mixing and students brought it home on Friday.

For International Dot Day, we created dot art with warm and cool colours. Mrs. Proctor and Mrs. Melindy's class did the same!

Next Wednesday is the first day of Autumn and we will be talking about seasonal changes!

This week we did our first Birthday Walk Around the Sun! Check the last blog entry for more information!

In gym we learned a new game called Not in my Yard where students can practice their underhand throws using the dodgeballs. It is similar to Dodge Ball but students are just trying to get the balls out of their side of the gym (or off their yards) rather than throwing the balls at each other.
