Sept. 21-25

Hello families!

Since we have to keep up to date with our classroom blogs and Google Classroom this year, I have decided that I will post on Google Classroom throughout the week and will post a blog at the end of each week. Otherwise, I just don't think I could keep up! Make sure to check out our Google Classroom for more frequent updates.

Here are a few highlights from this week!

For starters, our newest hermit crab is so much more active and friendly than the others. Over the spring/summer we unfortunately lost one of our three hermit crabs, but the family who took care of them for me replaced him with this friendly guy! (Or girl?) The students are really enjoying getting to see him move around more and eat. Hermit crabs are nocturnal so this is kind of a special treat!

This week we reviewed the letters H, Ar, J, and S. All of the characters are posted on our Google Classroom under "Animated Literacy." Students also enjoyed reading "The OK Book" and each student wrote their own page to contribute to a class book. The OK Book teaches that it is ok to be just ok at something, and eventually you might be really great at something, or maybe not! Sometimes it's ok to just be ok at something. It's a great story!

We also completed some number sense activities for math. Students in grade 1 showed me what they know about numbers 1-10 and students in grade 2 showed me their knowledge of numbers from 1-100. This was a great way for me to see where I need to meet each student. We also played some math games that can be differentiated for different levels. The students really enjoyed playing these independently!

We're still learning about tally marks!

This week we also continued talking a little bit about growth mindset and Terry Fox. Students did a great job with the Terry Fox Run on Thursday and they enjoyed doing a fall time scavenger hunt at the end of the day!

Please remember to return your brown envelopes with all of the back to school paper work if you have not returned it yet!

Orange Shirt Day
Orange Shirt Day is coming up this Wednesday. We will be discussing this important day at an age-appropriate level this week. I will share some of my favourite read alouds and resources on Google Classroom. Here is a link for some more information about Orange Shirt Day. Students are invited to wear an orange shirt on Wednesday. If they do not have an orange shirt, they could wear a similar colour such as red, pink, or yellow.
