March 4-8

Hello families,

Here's our weekly update! In the coming weeks I may be sharing a little less as we get closer to student-led conferences!

Math

In math we've been continuing to develop our fact fluency and exploring different ways to represent addition. Students worked on a big addition chart to show equations in different ways. I then used this activity to figure out which way each student needed to practice the most for our next lesson. Grade 2s learned how to add using expanded form and practiced fact families and grade 1s learned to represent addition using ten frames. Grade 1s will learn more about fact families when we have a better understanding of subtraction. Both grade 1 and 2 explored how number bonds are connected to addition!

Literacy

This week we learned about the long U sound with the bossy e (u_e). Sometimes this makes a "oo" sound like in 'flute' and sometimes is says "yu" like un 'unicorn.' We also learned that when an 'e' comes after a 'c' it makes the c soft - like in: nice, face, and fence. We made it through lessons 58, 59 and 60 on UFLI. Don't forget to check out their great resources - https://ufli.education.ufl.edu/foundations/toolbox/54-62/
Students showed what they know by brainstorming and writing sentences for bossy e words!

I completely forgot about our spelling quiz today - whoops! We will do it on Monday if you want to practice the words from last week's blog over the weekend. Here are the words for next week:

Science

This week we reviewed animals that hibernate, migrate and adapt. Next week we'll be working on some animal science that will be shared during Student-Led Conferences. On Friday we started learning about some of the new grade 2 Earth Systems science. We learned about the Earth and began looking at the geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere.

Art

Most students finished up their Picasso inspired portraits which will be on display during conferences!

PE & Wellness

In physical education, we've been working on basketball skills including dribbling, bounce passes, chest passes and keeping control of the ball.

This week students also reviewed what they learned with Ms. H about sleep, healthy diet and exercise!

Upcoming Dates
  • March 18-22 - Book Fair
  • March 21st (PM) & March 22nd (AM) - Student-Led Conferences

Conferences
Student-led conferences will be held on Thursday, March 21st in the evening and Friday, March 22nd in the morning. It is essential that your child attends this conference with you, as they will be the ones leading the work and sharing their learning. Please note that 3 families may be in the classroom at one time, therefore this is not a time for confidential conversations and is not a formal sit-down meeting. Each family will be able to view their child's work in the classroom, work alongside their child on hands-on activities, and have an opportunity to check in with the teacher. You are also invited to visit Mrs. Kawchuck in the music room and view the Scholastic Book Fair in the Learning Commons. Time slots are 45 minutes but you do not need to use the whole time if you don't need it!
