March 11-15

Hello families,

Here's our weekly update! I'll keep it pretty minimal so I don't spoil any of the work that will be shared at conferences next week.

Math

This week students had the opportunity to show what they learned in terms of recalling math facts and representing addition in a variety of ways. They will be sharing this work at conferences! We also enjoyed math groups this week and learned/reviewed some of our Montessori materials that are great for addition! On Friday we played a fun addition St. Patrick's Day game!

Montessori Stamp Game
(has nothing to do with stamps and is not a game, but a math tool!)

Montessori Addition Strip Board (For adding to 18)

Literacy

We continued talking about the bossy e and reviewed the "_ce" sound. We also learned that "_ge" makes the 'j' sound (i.e. page, huge, stage, etc.) We talked about the exceptions to these rules - English is tricky! Some exceptions would include: have, give, love, dove, solve, come, some, none - they make short vowel sounds even though there's an e on the end.

We read a couple more chapters of My Father's Dragon and students have been enjoying discussing the book and determining the problem and solution in each chapter. We've also been tracking the main characters path on a map!

Here are our words for next week:

Science

We reviewed what we learned last week about the geosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere. Students also chose an animal that either hibernates, migrates or adapts to survive the winter. We worked with our big buddy class to research the animals and take notes. Students also learned how to draw their animal and got feedback from their buddies. This work will all be shared at conferences!

Conferences
Student-led conferences will be held on Thursday, March 21st in the evening and Friday, March 22nd in the morning. It is essential that your child attends this conference with you, as they will be the ones leading the work and sharing their learning. Please note that 3 families may be in the classroom at one time, therefore this is not a time for confidential conversations and is not a formal sit-down meeting. Each family will be able to view their child's work in the classroom, work alongside their child on hands-on activities, and have an opportunity to check in with the teacher. You are also invited to visit Mrs. Kawchuk in the music room and view the Scholastic Book Fair in the Learning Commons. Time slots are 45 minutes but you do not need to use the whole time if you don't need it!
