September 5-8

Hello families,

We made it through our first (almost) full week of school! We are focusing a lot on learning expectations and building classroom community. We’ve been enjoying starting each day in circle getting to know our classmates. The pictures will be a little limited for the first few weeks until we have photo release information!

This week we talked a lot about carpet expectations. We read a story called “Whole-Body Listening at School” and learned about Listening Larry. Ask your child how many parts of our body we can listen with… it’s not just our ears. You can also follow up with “Whole Body Listening at Home” if this is something you are working on at home as well! I also like to use my cat, Eli, to show carpet expectations!

This week we started some introduction lessons to the UFLI literacy program. We’ve been learning how our mouth moves in different ways to make different sounds. We also started learning about “sky, grass, dirt” letters and have been practicing our writing on a whiteboard. We started talking about Daily Language Arts (LA) centres that we will be starting soon. We practiced read to self and buddy reading.

Imagine really cute photos of students buddy reading! 📚

Students really enjoyed learning about our class pets this week! We started by sharing some of our wonderings about hermit crabs. Then we observed their habitat and talked all about the things that they need to survive. We took them out on the carpet and watched them walk around and learned about their different body parts. We did a sort of items that they can and cannot eat, and students labelled the different parts of their bodies. We also read the story “A Home for Hermit Crab” by Eric Carle and talked a bit about how hermit crabs grow. They shed their exoskeleton which is pretty neat (and kind of gross!) ask your child if they remember what a crab does with its exoskeleton… nature is weird!

This month at LBS we are focusing on the Montessori tenant of Grace and Courtesy. My expectations for students are to show respect, kindness and safety to themselves, others, and our space. We are really taking the time to understand what all this means and have started with learning how we show we care about others. We read a story called “Trying a Little Kindness” and students were asked to draw one way that they can show they care about someone else. We will be continuing this conversation next week (and all throughout the year!)

We had an interesting end to the week as the internet was down at our school and some other CBE schools on Thursday and Friday. We took this opportunity to enjoy some time outside with Mrs. Green’s class. Students used nature from the ground to create their names. We will use photos of this work for the front cover of our field journals.

In math, students enjoyed playing the “What’s my Number?” game that we learned last week. We also started talking about patterns and I was very impressed with students’ prior knowledge. On Thursday we had fun making patterns with our bodies, and on Friday we drew different types of patterns in our math books!

We’ve been ending our days with some “tub time” where students can use different building materials with their classmates. This promotes creativity and helps students build relationships. Students especially enjoyed creating animals out of different building materials and having me guess what animal they made!

Our first fun lunch is on Thursday! Make sure to order soon if you’d like to place an order – orders will be closed 5 days prior to the fun lunch date!

Scholastic Book Orders

Today students enjoyed looking through the Scholastic book flier. We receive these each month! Students had fun either circling books they were interested in or making a list. We talked about how these books cost money and they can’t expect their families to buy them every book they want! I suggested working out a deal to earn some money to buy a book! When you order books it also gives us money to use to purchase items for our classroom. I believe I have to approve purchases but do not get notifications from Scholastic, so if you decide to place an order, please send me an email so it doesn’t go unnoticed!

I made a mistake with the class code (I couldn't access it without the internet!)

Class Code: RC142429
