September 18-21

Hello families! Here's some of what we did this week!

Math

We continued talking a little about patterns and worked on different ways to represent numbers. Grade 1 students are working on their teen numbers and enjoyed learning how to use the Montessori Teen Bead Hanger and the Teen Board with the Coloured Bead Bars. (I forgot to take photos so here's a visual from Google instead!) Grade 2 students were working on some numeracy government assessments this week!

Literacy

This week we continued with UFLI and reviewed the letters A, M and S. We're learning all about how to form our mouth properly and how to form the letters properly when writing. Students were asked to draw 4 things that start with these letters and sound the words out as best as they can. We talk about pretending to have a piece of bubblegum in your hand and stretching out each sound we hear. Grade 2s worked on writing sentences as a challenge! If you'd like to continue reinforcing these concepts at home, you can play lots of word games like I Spy (something that starts with \m/) building items that start with a certain letter out of building materials, reading stories and brainstorming with your child! At school we love watching Captain Sea Salt and Storybots!

On Thursday we tried our first Daily LA with groups working on different activities. We will practice a little more before we add in working with the teacher!

We also visited Mrs. Smith in the Learning Commons and learned all about the process of checking out library books. Next Thursday, students will have a chance to check out some books to read in the classroom or at home!

Science & Social Studies

Early this week we learned about Terry Fox. This was a very difficult conversation for some students and definitely involved some tears. We talked all about how Terry Fox never seemed sad and took his diagnosis as an opportunity to help other people - what a hero!

On Wednesday we braved the chilly and slightly rainy weather to go on a walking field trip with Ms. Greenhall's class. Ms. Greenhall taught us a little bit about the four sacred medicines and reviewed the medicine wheel. Students were invited to participate in a smudge if they wanted to. We learned how smudging can help us set intentions to feel our best, see the best in others, and help us to show kindness towards others. Next week we will be learning all about truth and reconciliation and discussing the purpose of Orange Shirt Day at an age appropriate level.

This week we also continued learning about germs and how to wash our hands properly. Nurse Diana taught us about different types of germs and the antibodies we have to help protect our bodies. We discussed how we can take care of our bodies to be healthy and strong including eating healthy, washing our hands, getting exercise and lots of sleep! We will do another activity together where all of the students can try the glow germs.

We signed our Classroom Contract where we all agreed to be respectful, kind and safe to ourselves, each other, and our space! We read "A Little Respectful Spot" and students drew and labelled ways that we show care for space (our classroom/school space and materials).
