October 19-22

Hello families!

We had another busy week together!

Literacy
This week we reviewed the letter 'R' with the character Rosie Raccoon. The letter "R" sound is a very tough one! If your child is having trouble with the pronunciation, please keep in mind that children often don't develop this sound until 7 or older. We also reviewed the letter "H" with the character Hippy Hippo.

Students also did some writing and drawing to help me think of a Halloween costume for this year! Here are a few! Some of the writing was copied from a whiteboard and some was sounded out with support or independently.

Math
We have been focusing in on our teen numbers. This week we looked at the numbers 11 and 12. Students built the numbers using the Montessori Bead Bars, stamped the numbers, coloured the correct quantity and came up with different addition questions to make the numbers. Students were provided with three different options and could choose the difficulty level that best suited them.

We also had fun playing a Halloween math game called "Spider Legs." We played Ms. Midgley vs. the class but this can be played in partners/groups and at home. Each player draws a spider body and leg. They then roll 3 dice to see if that can make the number 8 using those dice (because spiders have 8 legs!) For example, if I rolled a 4, 5 and 1, I could add 5+4 to get 9, and take away 1 to get 8. If you are able to make 8, you get to add a leg to your spider, if not, you pass your turn. This can also be played with a deck of cards or dominos!

Science
This week we started learning about pumpkins! We brainstormed what we already know about pumpkins and what we would like to learn. We have two pumpkins in our classroom that we will be working with and learning about next week as well. Today students chose a pumpkin to focus on and predicted the weight and height of the pumpkin. We used a 3lbs weight and students had to decide if the pumpkin was heavier, lighter or the same as the weight. We used cubes to measure the height.

As a Responsible Work Choice for students who have completed their class work, I have introduced a nature table for students to look closely at nature. Students have been working in partners to use the loupes and their sketching techniques to draw what they see when they zoom in on nature. Not every student has had a chance to visit the nature table yet.

We had our last demonstration this week for the first Montessori Great Lesson. Prior to our last demonstration, students made predictions about how water formed on Earth. We then learned about liquids, solids and gasses. (By the time I took this picture, our solid was almost a liquid!)

Active Listening
This week, Ms. Thomas spent some time in our classroom in the afternoons! This year Ms. Thomas is teaching AM Kindergarten and provides resource/literacy support in the afternoons. She taught our class about full-body listening with Listening Larry. Did you know that you show full body listening with 8 different parts of your body? See if your child can remember all 8!

We applied our full body listening skills when sharing about what makes our families special!

Kelso's Choices
We focused in on the idea of apologizing this week! We talked about how to make a sincere apology and how to accept an apology. We watched the social story "Zach Apologizes" and learned about a 4 Square Apology.

Halloween
Students are invited to wear their Halloween costumes to school on Friday, October 29th. Here are some things to keep in mind in regards to costumes:
  • Students should arrive at school with their costumes on
  • Costumes should be school appropriate (ie. non-violent)
  • No weapons allowed
  • No full face masks allowed - we need to be able to see you and covid face masks must still be able to be worn
  • Face paint is allowed but students will still be able to wear their face masks
  • Costumes should not prevent students from participating in physical activity throughout the day or other regular classroom activities
At this time, we are not able to share Halloween treats together so please do not send any treats for the class.

Move-ember

November is movement month at LBS! We are encouraging students to be active throughout the winter with a movement challenge for move-ember :).

Students are encouraged to keep track of their movement minutes outside of school time from November 1-30. The class that earns the most movement minutes at the end of the month will earn a special reward! Please support your child in tracking their movement minutes either on Google Classroom or hardcopy (this will be specified by your child's teacher).

Let’s encourage each other to be active and healthy! See the video for more information about our at school and at home challenges for the month.
