September 27-October 1

Hello families,

We had a busy week in room 11! Make sure to read my last post for more information about social skills we discussed and some of our learning about Orange Shirt Day. Let's start there!!

Social Studies

This week we learned all about Orange Shirt Day and residential schools. We had some great discussions as a class, watched some videos and read some stories about Orange Shirt Day. Ms. Gierl and Ms. Mumford's grade 4/5 classes prepared a virtual sharing assembly to help teach us more. We discussed what school should feel like and how we can make sure we are creating a kind and safe space for all students in our school.

Science

This week we finished up our shades and tints ice cream cones! We also continued talking about the fall season and students drew and wrote about their favourite things about fall!

Math

In math we have been working on some number sense. We are starting with reviewing our numbers from 5-10 and different ways to represent them. Students also enjoyed playing some math games on Friday that involved making 10 or adding numbers together.

Literacy

This week we focused on the letters 'M' and 'X.' I am now realizing that we never read the 'x' story! We will have to do that on Monday! Students have also really been enjoying Daily 5 literacy time. If you would like to use Raz-Kids at home, the teacher username is lmidgley0 Most students seem to know their passwords but please email me if you need it!

A few other things...

This week we didn't quite get to learning about Kelso's Choices - it's on the agenda for next week! Next week we will also start learning about the Montessori Great Lessons as one theory about how the world came to be. Here is more information if you're interested - https://www.montessori.nsw.edu.au/blog/montessori-five-great-lessons

Again this year we are trying to avoid having children use the water fountain. Please remember to send your child with a water bottle each day! We are also asking families to ensure that students have appropriate utensils in their lunch as we have been giving away a lot of disposable spoons and forks.
