Literacy

This week we reviewed the letters J and K. Students wrote about their weekends. This week we are going to focus on legibility and spaces. We read lots of Halloween stories and re-visited the Junie B. Jones book that we stopped reading for awhile.

One of the books we read this week was The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin. This story is mostly about accepting others even if they are different. We also watched the movie in three sections and students drew about what happened at the beginning and middle of the story. This week we will finish this activity and do some comparing between the book and movie.

Math

Students enjoyed playing Spider Legs this week with a partner! We all worked together to count up the pumpkin seeds in each of our pumpkins by making groups of 10 and skip counting. Students also practiced their tally marks and graphing when we collected data about who liked and did not like the pumpkin seeds.

Science

Students had fun learning a little bit about what makes an object sink or float. We made some predictions and tested some materials - most students were pretty surprised to see that a pumpkin floats!

Students had fun separated the pulp and fibrous strands of the pumpkin from the seeds. We talked about the 5 senses of pumpkins and students enjoyed tasting the seeds! We learned about the different parts of a pumpkin through art - the paint definitely doesn't stick to the plates very well! I only got a photo of my plate! We also learned about the lifecycle of a pumpkin!

We were so busy with pumpkins this week and Social Studies took a little bit of a back seat, so we will get back to our learning about families this week!

Kelso's Choices
This week we focused on the Kelso's Choice "Ignore it!" We watched this video about the "art of ignoring" and discussed when ignoring can be helpful or hurtful.

Happy Halloween from our Grade 1 Team!

Move-ember

November is movement month at LBS! We are encouraging students to be active throughout the winter with a movement challenge for move-ember :).

Students are encouraged to keep track of their movement minutes outside of school time from November 1-30. The class that earns the most movement minutes at the end of the month will earn a special reward! Please support your child in tracking their movement minutes either on Google Classroom or hardcopy (this will be specified by your child's teacher).

Let’s encourage each other to be active and healthy! See the video for more information about our at school and at home challenges for the month.
