January 18-22

Hello families!

We had a busy week at school - January is flying by!

This week we focused on words from the "an" family. I am realizing now that I never posted the words on Google Classroom - my apologies! We learned a poem called The Tall Man and student again visualized what they saw when reading the poem.

This week we looked at another animal story called "What if You Had Animal Feet?" Students thought about how animal feet would allow them to survive the winter. Here are a few!

Students will be turning themselves into an animal that either adapts, hibernates or migrates to survive the winter. They will be giving themselves features of different animals to help them survive the winter. Students started a first draft of their designs and next week they will receive peer feedback before moving on to their good copy. They will also be designing a background for themselves that reflects how their animal survives the winter. Students learned about different textures this week which will be incorporated into their background. I would have loved to use this program called "Be Your Wild Self" but unfortunately it no longer exists. We did use photos from the program for inspiration though.

In math, we revisited the idea of collecting data and graphing. Students in grade 1 and 2 reviewed bar graphs - grade 2 students were responsible for creating their own graph show the data. Students in grade 2 also looked at pictographs and practiced their ability to interpret information from a pictograph. Students in grade 1 were given an open ended math problem that threw them for a bit of a loop: You have a bag with 13 apples. Some are red and some are yellow. How many of each could you have? This week we also learned about doubles facts for addition. I was impressed with how well students already knew their doubles! We practiced, watched some videos, and played some games to help us remember. Next week we will learn how knowing our doubles can help us with other addition problems (i.e. doubles plus 1 or minus 1 - if 5+5=10 then 5+6 must be one more).

This week we also reviewed the mask-wearing expectations at school. On Monday, students were given many different scenarios and had to decide as a table group, when they should be wearing their masks, and when it is ok to take them off. We then discussed as a class. It's a lot for the students to remember but we are doing our best!

Today, Ms. Wuetherick did a lesson with students that focused on showing who we are despite having to wear a mask. Students really enjoyed drawing themselves, designing their own masks, and writing things that are special to them, or things that make them special.

Students also finished up their Laurel Burch inspired cat art that we started last Friday!

Valentine's Day

This year we will celebrate Valentine's Day at school on Wednesday, February 10th. The school has decided that students will not be permitted to bring cards or treats to school. I have not told the students this information yet and know they will be upset. I am thinking about things we can do at school to have as much fun (and learn along the way, of course!) on Valentine's Day this year.

Upcoming Dates:
  • Wednesday, January 27th - LBS Literacy Day
  • Thursday, January 28th - School-wide Crazy Hair Day
  • Friday, January 29th - PD Day (No School)
  • Early February - Report Cards Available (specific date to come)
  • Wednesday, February 10th - Valentine's Day at school
  • Thursday, February 11th & Friday, February 12th - Teacher's Convention (No School)
  • Monday, February 15th - Family Day (No School)
