September 12-16

Hello families!

We made it through our first full week of school!

This week we started to review some letters and sounds with the Animated Literacy program. Since this is review for most students, we talked about the character and action that goes with each letter., rather than the full story and song. We've been doing a letter each day and this week covered: S, A, T, I and M. Students brainstormed words and drew pictures of things that start with these letters. Students then did their best to stretch out the words and spell them as best as they could. We also continued to practice building reading stamina with Read to Self, and Buddy Reading. On Tuesday afternoon we have a Back To School Blast virtual presentation from the Calgary Public Library.

In phys ed, we enjoyed sharing some of our gym time with Ms. Gierl and Mrs. Green's classes. We learned how to use the parachute and played lots of fun games. It was a blast! We have gym times on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, and will either share the space on Thursdays and Fridays, or go outdoors for phys ed.

In math we are continuing to learn about patterns. This week we focused on the core of a pattern and grade two students learned about growing patterns. Next week we will be doing some math art (m-art, if you will) so students practiced using their checklist to build patterns in preparation. On Friday, we learned some new math games, and the students had a lot of fun playing them together. Students had time this week to explore different math work choices as well.

On Thursday it was International Dot Day. This day is inspired by Peter H. Reynold's book "The Dot" which celebrates creativity. All. grade 1/2 classes participated in a collaborative dot art project which you can see on display in the hallway on Thursday evening during the Open House.

On Friday, we met with our big buddy class for the first time! Our buddy class is Mr. Link's grade 3/4 class. Students did some buddy reading and then we went outside for PE together.

Lake Bonavista School is proud to be participating in this year’s Terry Fox School Run. Our run will take place on Wednesday, September 21 at 12:40pm following Room 2’s sharing assembly. Let’s get our fundraising going and show everyone how we can “Try like Terry”! To donate: https://schools.terryfox.ca/LakeBonavista. Together, we can all make a difference.
