October 17-21

Hello families,

We've had a busy 5 day week! We enjoyed two more art sessions with Ms. Sharon and learned about how Peter Reynolds uses lines in his artwork.

This week we took advantage of the nice weather and spent a little extra time outside. Students made their names out of nature for the cover of our nature journals, and some created nature Mandalas if they had extra time. We also spent some time practicing lines and mindfulness with our Zentangles outside.

In math, we continued to work on representing numbers using hundreds, tens and ones. We also learned a new math card game called Wild Jacks. The video below can teach you I Spy and Wild Jacks if you're interested in playing at home.

We did another picture sort for the letters F, E, K, R and H. We reviewed L, V, U and J. Students BEGGED me to do an activity from last year where they designed Halloween costumes for me! We talked about the purpose of this writing which is persuasive writing. I am not expecting students to write a persuasive paragraph - just to provide a strong reason for their costume idea. I included quite a few because they always make me laugh!

We continued to learn a little bit about the medicine wheel and focused in on the yellow section of the medicine wheel which represents the spirt or "to be." We are exploring the question Who am I? An interview form was sent home for you to complete with your child over the next week. Please do not send any artifacts that are irreplaceable. If there is something valuable your child would like to share, we recommend taking a photo instead. If you cannot print it at home, please email me the photo and I can print it. Please let me know if you have any questions! Please return the interview by Tuesday, November 1st.

Colder Weather

As the colder weather approaches, please ensure your child has appropriate outdoor clothing for spending time outdoors. We spend time outside no matter the weather! (unless it's colder than -20!) I always recommend sending a spare change of clothes and socks in case children get wet at recess time.

Halloween 👻

Halloween is Monday, October 31st. Students are invited to wear Halloween costumes if they would like. We remind all students that there is no gore, no masks and no weapons.  Students should come with their costumes on. Please ensure that costumes are comfortable to be worn throughout the day and will be safe and suitable for all daily activities such as gym, recess and learning time. Inflatable costumes are challenging for students to work in throughout the day. We are asking that grade 1/2 students do not wear inflatable costumes. In keeping with nutrition and health protocols, we ask for no additional treats or snacks to be sent in.

The parade is BACK!  We are so happy to welcome families back to the school for our Halloween parade. The gym will be set up for costume viewing. Our parade will start at 1:00 and students will wander through the gym to showcase their costumes. If you would like to join us, please come to the front door and join us in the gym for 1:00.  Please connect with your child’s teacher if you do not want your child participating in Halloween activities, such as the parade, during the day.

November 1st will be the Spirit Day chosen by rooms 10 and 12. We will be having a pajama day. All staff and students are invited to wear their comfy pjs for the day.
