November 7-10

Hello families,

This week we continued working on improving the neatness of our writing with sky, grass, dirt letters. Students did some writing about their weekend to practice this skill. We also combined some of our science learning with our writing and started talking about using sensory language in our writing to make it more interesting. Students in grade 2 are also working on using synonyms in their writing.

We also started on our Words Their Way "Word Work Groups." All grade 1/2 students will be working with their Word Work Groups for the last part of the day (2:10-2:35). This is just a portion of our literacy instruction which is targeted at supporting students individual next steps. This week we got to know each other and introduced our routine. We will start with our personalized word work on Monday.

In math we have been working on a few things! We reviewed equal and unequal quantities and learned about greater than and less than symbols to compare numbers. I love the saying in the alligator video -"The hungry alligator eats the number that's greater. The number that's least is never part of its feast." We've also been working on representing numbers in different ways and this week we learned about tally marks. Some students were a bit mixed up between counting groups of 10 instead of 5 and we will continue to work on this!

This week Mrs. Carreño taught us all about Remembrance Day. We discussed the importance of this day and why we honour it. We learned some vocabulary as well as the importance of the poppy. Students enjoyed making their own poppies out of cupcake liners. We also learned a poem to help us with understanding the poppy symbol and the expectations of a Remembrance Day sharing assembly.

Art Cards

Art Card samples came home this week. I am so happy with how ours turned out! Remember to order before November 17th!
