February 27-March 3

Hello families,

Happy Friday! Here are some updates from our week!

This week in math we practiced our counting on addition strategy. During our morning work, we also reviewed greater than, less than and equal to. We also started using open number lines to represent addition. We continued with our math groups as well - I've really been enjoying the small group math work and using our materials a little more.

In literacy we learned about the "kn" sound. This technically is not part of the grade 1 or 2 curriculum, but it was coming up a lot in the classroom so I wanted to address it. Students do not need to know when they are writing if a work is just n or kn, but hopefully when they are reading they will remember that the k is silent!

This week we also started talking about nutrition and eating habits! We talked about our favourite foods and what would happen if we ate them every day. We also played a game similar to charades or headbands where a student had to guess the food based on their classmates' clues. We are trying to stay away from talking about healthy vs unhealthy food, but rather building healthy eating habits and knowing that treats are ok! After all, who can afford to eat as many fruits and vegetables as we're supposed to these days?

In science we have been reviewing the states of matter and have began focusing on water. We discussed the importance of water and learned where water in our homes comes from.

In social studies, we've been learning about communities. We've reviewed landmarks and parts of our community and enjoyed going on a community walk to explore and identify some landmarks. We also reviewed the Medicine Wheel and directions, as well as the sacred medicines. We did an offering to the land with our tobacco and students enjoyed sharing what they were feeling grateful for. We spent time looking in the four directions and identifying community landmarks. On Friday, we looked at pictures from our day and sketched what we saw! We didn't quite finish this activity but will continue next week!

Word Work Groups

We are so excited to be back to our afternoon routine of Word Work Groups! Earlier this year, the students were re-assessed in order to see their growth in spelling. We were so impressed with their improvements in understanding spelling patterns and were proud to create new groups. Ask your child what they have been learning this week in word work groups!
