October 30-November 3

Hello families!

We had a busy week in room 11! I'm doing my best to remember everything we did this week without my planner!

Math

In math we've been continuing our work with skip counting! Grade 1s were working on skip counting by 5s to 100 and grade 2s were working on counting by 1s to 1000. Skip counting is a great activity to practice in the car! As I was corrected this week - "practice makes progress!" We're also continuing to work on understanding place value. We also looked at the November calendar this week to help us remember important dates coming up this month! We had fun playing some math games on Tuesday as well!

Grade 1

Grade 2

Literacy

This week we just about finished our letter review! We reviewed the letters V, Qu, X and Z. The characters are Victor Vampire, Quentin Quail, Max the Fox & Felix Fox, and Zachary & Zena Zebra. The grade 1/2 team will be presenting at the beginning of the School Council meeting on Tuesday! Everyone is welcome to attend!

Here are our heart words for next week! We will practice these words next week and the following week given that both are 3 day weeks!

We enjoyed reading the story "Spookley the Square Pumpkin" and we watched the movie! We had fun using a Venn Diagram to compare the movie and book. Students worked in their table groups with grade 2s as the leaders/writers to record their ideas and then we came together to share all of our comparisons.

Science

We wrapped up our pumpkin investigation this week! We had fun designing and carving pumpkins and completing our KWL chart for what we learned about pumpkins. Students were encouraged to add ideas beyond the shared classroom examples. We also enjoyed tasting the pumpkin seeds!

Here's our grade 1/2 Number Blocks costume!!

This week we began talking about Remembrance Day a little bit! We are continuing to collect items for the Veteran's Essential Items drive until Wednesday! We will have our Remembrance Day assembly on Wednesday.

In the spirit on both generosity and building community, Rooms 7 and 8 are organizing an Essential Items Drive to support veterans.   All donations will help the Veteran Food Bank of Alberta provide everyday items to those who have honourably served in the Canadian Forces.  We appreciate any items that you can donate from the list.

Hermit Crabs
If any families are interested in taking care of our classroom hermit crabs over the November Break, please send me an email! I can also take care of them! They are low maintenance and can be left alone for a couple of days. I will also be looking for help with them over the Winter Break and March Break!
