November 27 - December 1

Hello Families,

Here's what we did this week!

Math

In math this week we has fun building things out of base ten blocks to represent different numbers! Students chose a number and built it as a animal, robot, spaceship, etc.

We also started learning about part-part-whole or composing/decomposing numbers and representing this through number bonds. Students enjoyed using snap cubes and dominos to create number bonds. Grade 2 students chose to challenge themselves with using base ten blocks instead! This learning will bring us into addition and subtraction soon!

We also tested out math groups for the first time on Thursday! One of our stations is practicing our number printing as I know number reversals are a concern for many parents - it will come with time and practice!

We did our December calendar on Friday as well to help us stay organized for the month! Did you know that exploring cycles and patterns in calendars is part of our new math curriculum?

Literacy

We've been doing lots of Daily LA stations this week. We've enjoyed doing two stations each day which is allowing me to read with each group twice/week instead of once! I've been really impressed at the grade 1s ability to read some of our decodable stories. Don't forget to check out these sites if you want some decodable books to read at home!

We also reviewed the short o and short u sounds this week!

We did some shared writing about the beach as well to review adjectives and synonyms. We chose to describe the overall beach, the sand, the sky, and the water. What adjectives would you use to describe this picture?

Here's our list of high-frequency words we'll be focusing on next week!

Social Studies

We began learning about the Seven Sacred Teachings (sometimes called the Seven Grandfather Teachings or the Seven Sacred Laws).

We started with learning about respect which is represented by the buffalo. We learned why the buffalo was chosen to represent respect - Indigenous people felt it was important to use each part of the buffalo and made sure nothing went to waste! We read some stories about respect and students wrote about how they can respect animals, people and nature.
