January 16-19

Hello Families,

Here's our weekly update! Also, we decided on the name Cleo for our new hermit crab!

Literacy

This week we learned about digraphs. Digraphs are two consonants that go together to make one sound. We learned "ck" and "sh." Students enjoyed learning two poems - The Sick Duck and Hungry Shark. Ask your child about the actions for ck and sh!

We also started learning about what makes a sentence and looked at examples and non-examples of sentences. Students worked to re-arrange a sentence and grade 2 students were challenged with adding adjectives and more detail to make the sentence more interesting.

Here are words for next week! (Sorry I forgot them in last week's blog post!) Each morning we practice these words during our opening task. Students use a choice board to decide how to practice. You can also practice the words at home by writing, building and playing with these words!

Math

In math we've been continuing to look at graphing and specifically pictographs. We collected data from our class about favourite desserts, season and colour as well as our eye colours. Students represented this data in tally charts, bar graphs and pictographs. We also finished up our grade 1 government assessments. We did some mini-lessons about open number lines, addition and subtraction to help support their understanding a little bit! We will going back and looking at addition and subtraction in more detail next.

Social Studies

We've almost finished up learning about the Seven Sacred Teachings. This week we looked at wisdom and humility which are represented by the beaver and wolf. Students wrote a thank you to someone who has taught them something important. We talked about wisdom as being big life lessons and how to be a good person and who taught us these things. Humility is all about being humble and knowing we all have something to offer. We discussed roles and responsibilities at school and at home.

Health & Wellness

In PE we started learning floor hockey skills and have been using centres to practice stick handling, passing and trapping.

We're continuing to learn about boundaries and consent. We reviewed boundaries and learned what consent means. We read a story called "Don't Hug Doug." How do we know if it's ok to touch another person?
