October 28 - November 1

Hello families, 

Happy Hallo-week! We had a great week together with lots of Halloween fun! 

We started our week with some ghost art! Students enjoyed experimenting with chalk pastels - they are messy! 


Some of our other Halloween fun included designing a Halloween costume for Ms. Midgley, a Roll-a-Monster activity, a Halloween alphabet challenge, spooky sounds challenge, a pumpkin weaving activity with our big buddies, Halloween stations and of course, the Halloween parade! 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

In math, we continued to work on representing numbers with hundreds, tens and ones each morning. We also added a spooky spin on things by using pumpkins, brooms and haunted houses instead of ones, tens and hundreds! We also worked on our November calendar activity on Friday! 



This week we reviewed the letter E with the characters Ellie the Elephant and Edgar Elf! Ask your child about the action and sound! We also read lots of Halloween stories and enjoyed Daily LA each day. 

 


Next week, we are going to start learning the high-frequency words for grade 1 and 2! Each week students will focus on 5 words (grade 1) or 10 words (grade 2) from the list. I will also give an easier option for grade one students of words that come from the list but are grouped together with commonalities, as the words increase in difficulty. Here are the words we're starting with for next week! 



We enjoyed watching Inside Out on Friday to kick-off our learning about emotions and self-regulation!

Hello families,  We had a very busy week getting ready for our winter concert and our Calgary Humane Society fundraiser! Students love baking and packaging treats, making posters, and some students were even challenged to learn how to curl the ribbon! On Friday we used our skip counting skills to count up all the money we've raised so far. We've raised $666.85 and are hoping to break our record of $700 from last year! All of this work is connected to our health and wellness curriculum (volunteerism), social studies, science, art, math and literacy! Wow! Math In math we've been continuing to work with number bonds. This week students learned how to determine the missing number in a number bond when given the whole and one of the parts. This is a pre-cursor to subtraction! September 3-6

Hello families,  Here's our weekly update!  In September we are focusing on building community in our classroom, getting to know each other, and learning classroom routines and expectations. I can tell the biggest thing we need to work on is noise level! 😅 We read the story "We Don't Eat our Classmates" and talked about treating other people the way we want to be treated. Students had fun doing a step-by-step drawing of a T-rex!  We also learned about calendars and completed a calendar activity for September. Grade 2 students labelled each day and wrote the special days in September. Grade 1s could choose a calendar template where they wrote their own numbers to 30 or traced the numbers to 30. They were then asked to colour their calendar in a pattern as I wanted to see what they know about patterns already. Hello families,  Here's our weekly update!  Reminders Sound Kreations dance forms came home this week. Please return them as soon as possible! 😊 Home Reading folders will start on Monday for those who expressed interest - thanks for your patience!  Thank you to everyone who offered to volunteer for the grade 1/2 art blocks. We have all the volunteers we need now!  An email was sent earlier this week about some online sessions regarding speech and reading. RSVP by Friday, April 19th. Science & Social Studies This week we've been enjoying learning more about water! Our sharing assembly on the 30th will be all about water and Earth Day! We learned that not everyone has access to clean drinking water and we came up with ways to conserve water for Earth Day. Students made posters to share with the rest of the school. Earth Day is on Monday, April 22nd! We also made some water inspired art that will be in the display case near the front office.  For our assembly we are learning
