Thursday

Hello families!

I mentioned the other day that students were really interested in the story "Why Should I Protect Nature?" So, today we read the story "The Earth Book" by Todd Parr and students drew and wrote about 4 things they do to help the Earth. During work period, students also practiced their "-ay" words and painted their clay landscapes from our Leighton Art Centre field trip.

In the afternoon we had Daily 5 literacy time and we started talking about group work. We discussed the good things (benefits) of working in a group and the challenging parts of working in a group. This is what we came up with:

Benefits:
- Work with new people and make new friends
- Help each other
- Work faster
- Each person can help with a different thing that they are good at

Challenges:
- Trying to work together and share your ideas without being mean
- Communicating with each other
- Speaking in front of the whole group
- Don't always get your way (and have to compromise!)
- Making a decision altogether

We then watched the social story "Teamwork isn't my thing, and I don't like to Share." Students then worked in groups of 5 to count out 100 snap cubes. We had three pretty different experiences and discussed how groups worked together and what was good about the experience and what we'd do differently next time (including me giving clearer instructions about doing it efficiently!)

Group #1:
- Students worked as a team
- Everyone contributed
- Finished counting in 2-3 minutes

Group #2:
- Started by sharing how they could count
- Decided to each count 20 cubes
- Couldn't all come to an agreement and had some arguments
- Had some difficulties communicating and compromising
- Put all of the snap cubes in one big pile so it was difficult to see if they had 100

Group #3:
- Started by making rainbow lines
- Were not arguing but also not clearly communicating with each other
- Made 100 by making 10 groups of 10
- Took the longest to complete the task

We will continue to work on some different group work tasks in preparation for our upcoming community project!

One World Drumming
Tomorrow we will be starting a One World Drumming Artist in Residence program. This company will be working with our school for the next two weeks. We are very excited about this unique experience! Our class will not be starting until the week of March 2nd. Our gym is the only space large enough to host these sessions so our PE time for the next two weeks will be a combination of classroom activities and outdoor activities!
