January 23-27

Hello families!

Happy Family Literacy Day! Here are some games that can be played at home to celebrate: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1dzbmTocQfj0Tzf2yAKiCeWXZrFtjUAui8fqbijCJmU4/edit?usp=sharing

On Thursday at our assembly, we learned about the program Spellie. We've been using it in the classroom now! There is a new word challenge every day if you'd like to try it on the weekend. Please don't do it in the mornings during the week as we will be using it at school!

This week we were very excited to have AARCS come visit us. Nicole came to speak to us about what AARCS does and how the money we raised helps them. She brought alone Bruja who is a foster dog - she was so sweet! We were so proud to raise $705.10!

In math we learned about addition! We read the story "The Mission of Addition" and took our first try at some addition problems. We also continued our work with data collection and the grade 2 students created their own survey questions, collected the data, and graphed their findings. Grade 1 students worked hard at the rest of the grade 1 government assessments! The grade 1s also learned a little bit of subtraction on Friday to prepare them for part of the government assessments. We're all done now!

In social studies, we learned about the last sacred teaching which is Truth. We discussed this similarities between truth and honesty. We also enjoyed a presentation from the Calgary Public Library called Caretakers of the Land.

We also enjoyed learning about the Lunar New Year! Our buddy class came to show us this amazing lion costume!

On Thursday we enjoyed our board game afternoon! It was so much fun! On Friday we celebrated Family Literacy Day - thanks to all the families that were able to make it in to read!

In literacy we learned about the "ck" sound and when to use a 'c' at the beginning of a word vs a 'k.' The Scratch Garden 'ck' video isn't available until Monday so we will be eager to watch it next week!

We also enjoyed some new work choices this week!

On Friday we finally got a chance to observe some snowflakes! I'm having some regrets about saying I wanted it to snow.... It was difficult to see the details and determine if they were dendrites, columns or plates but we still had fun!

Report Cards

Report cards will be available on Monday online! Please note that our report card stems have changed a little from last year, as well as the math and english language and literature curriculum. You will no longer see the results reporting (citizenship, character, and personal development) on the report card. Students will receive a grade between 1-4 for each report card stem. If your child is not meeting grade level expectations (a 1 grade) I will have contacted you already - this will never be a surprise!
