January 9-13

Hello families,

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a restful Winter Break! We have been busy reviewing some learning this week and getting back into our usual classroom routines.

We've been starting each day with a Morning Message with a focus on 10 high-frequency words (pulled from the same document sent home in our home reading folders). We learned a little more about what high frequency words are (some sight words and some fully or partially decodable) and learned some different ways to practice them. Sometimes the partially decodable words are called "heart words" because there are parts of the word that we can decode and parts that we need to remember by heart.

We have also been reviewing some digraphs. We reviewed Ch, Sh, Th and Wh. Ask your child about the actions for these sounds! We LOVE these silly Scratch Garden videos for each digraph.

In math we continued with some data collection and graphing. We shared different winter activities that we did over the break (skiing, snowboarding, skating, sledding, etc.) and graphed the information in a bar graph using a scale that counted by 2s as an extra challenge.

We also started learning about part-part-whole through Number Bonds. We learned a really fun math game called "Bonds, Math Bonds" (I of course had to show a clip from James Bond so the students would get the joke). You can play it at home with a deck of cards. Ask your child how to play! We also practiced making number bonds using dominos.

In science we continued learning about snowflakes and learned about the lifecycle of a snowflake.

In social studies we continued our learning about the Seven Sacred Teachings. On Friday we learned about the beaver which represents wisdom. This was a really big concept for students are we will continue to explore the idea of wisdom next week.
