Science & Social Studies
This week we've been enjoying learning more about water! Our sharing assembly on the 30th will be all about water and Earth Day! We learned that not everyone has access to clean drinking water and we came up with ways to conserve water for Earth Day. Students made posters to share with the rest of the school. Earth Day is on Monday, April 22nd! We also made some water inspired art that will be in the display case near the front office.
For our assembly we are learning this song about the water cycle. We have a class of singers and they're very excited so I said I would share the video on the blog so they can practice at home. Time permitting... I may learn it on guitar so we can perform it without the sound from the video. The lyrics are below!
Water Cycle

The clouds fill up and then let go
with rain or hail or sleet or snow
That’s precipitation
And all that water collects and waits
in puddles, oceans, streams and lakes
That’s accumulation
And ‘round and ‘round it goes
from high to down below
The plants need it to grow
and when I wash my clothes
Like a wheel that rolls
it might go fast or slow
From mountain tops
and over rocks
it never stops the water cycle goes
The sun makes water rise up high
becomes a gas or cloudy sky
That’s evaporation
Now in the sky it gets cold and then
the clouds turn into water again
And that’s condensation
(Chorus)
Without you where would I ski
Without you nothing’s in my tea
Without you there wouldn’t be
chicken soup or mac-n-cheese
Without you Niagara falls
is nothing but a big stone wall
Without you where would I be
you’re 62% of me
(Chorus)
From mountain tops
and over rocks
From winter snow
to spring raindrops
And it’s at work around the clock
it never stops the water cycle goes
goes and goes
We are learning a little more about the Maritime provinces! We are investigating landforms, geography, clothing, celebrations, Acadian history, animals, etc. This is what our artwork with Ms. Davies is focused on!
Math
This week grade 1s learned how to use tens frames to show subtraction and grade 2s learned how to use open number lines. We further explored the relationship between addition and subtraction by learning about fact families!
Grade 1: subtraction using tens frames (12-5) |
Grade 2: Subtraction using an open number line |
During math groups, some grade 2 students were learning how to subtract with borrowing. This is a super tricky concept! We use the golden beads to help us model borrowing a ten and breaking it down into ten ones so we can subtract!
Literacy
We are finally (almost) done our Who Am I? writing good copies! Students have learned a lot about the Writer's Workshop process. We're hoping to do at least one more writer's workshop where students will be revising and editing their work more independently.
In UFLI this week we learned about the 'y' ending of words and that 'y' at the end of the word sometimes says ī (like in sky) or ē (like in puppy).
We finished up My Father's Dragon and enjoyed watching the movie together on Monday. The movie is on Netflix if you're interested in watching it at home. On Tuesday, students worked in groups to compare the book and the movie using a Venn Diagram.
Here are our words for next week (red words are all the long "i" sound made by 'y'):
