April 8-12
Hello families,
This week a brochure came home about Child Safe Canada Spring & Summer Courses. Here's the link - https://childsafecanada.com/programs/children_ages_4-8
Here's our weekly update!
Science & Social Studies
We had a great time at Fish Creek Park on Tuesday! Students enjoyed learning about different plants and their uses during our plant walk! We enjoyed reading a story, playing a game together, and exploring in our small groups! Thank you to all of the volunteers who were able to join us!
We also continued learning about bodies of water and the water cycle. We investigated how the sun, moon and planets move in the solar system and learned how daylight comes and goes! This was perfect timing with Monday's (anti-climactic) eclipse!
Literacy
This week with UFLI we learned about the "ing" ending and about open and closed syllables. We briefly learned about some rules for adding the "ing" ending to verbs but students aren't expected to remember all of these rules. We also learned about closed syllables and compound words! We revisited the "schwa" sounds and learned that it can be represented by all of the vowels.
We also started working on editing our "Who am I?" writing during Daily LA groups. Some groups have started their good copies as well!
Here are next week's words (we're going back to some "th" words):
Math
This week we learned how to show subtraction using pictures (gr 1 using symbols and gr 2 using base ten blocks) and using number lines (gr 1) and hundreds charts (gr 2). When students make a mistake in their work, they return to it to try again - we learn best when we make mistakes! On Friday we had fun playing subtraction bingo!
PE & Wellness
We had fun starting our gymnastics unit! We learned a lot of different locomotor skills and balances. We also started learning how to walk carefully on the balance beam and do a safety landing to get off the beam. Students were provided with ways they could challenge themselves on the beam. Each week we will be adding more equipment and will eventually be using our school's Canadian Climber.
We reviewed the idea of peace and how it has many different meanings. We reviewed using "Peace Talks" to solve conflicts with friends and peers at school. We talked about how some people may need time to think and be alone before having a peace talk and it is important to respect this. It's also important for each person to have a chance to speak and share their feelings without being interrupted. Teachers are always here to support students in having peace talks and eventually we hope students can carry out these conversations on their own.
