April 22-26

Hello families, 

Here's our weekly update! I'm going to keep it brief as I have lots of video editing and guitar playing to do for our assembly next week! 

Math

This week we continued to explore fact families and students were challenged by being given the whole and one of the parts, then had to determine the missing part. We also started looking at addition and subtraction word problems! We'll continue this work next week. We also had some fun with the math shakers and learned two games as a class. 

Literacy

This week we only did a few UFLI lessons as we were so focused on our assembly. We learned about the "-le" ending. Students have also been working on many cross curricular literacy tasks when engaged in math, science and social studies learning. 


Oops! Almost forgot our words for next week. The red list words do not come from our high-frequency word list, but from the UFLI word list for the y ending long e sound! 

Science 

Our main focus this week has been science and preparing for our assembly. We enjoyed celebrating Earth Day on Monday and have been working hard to be prepared to share our learning on Tuesday. I won't share too much so that our assembly will be more of a surprise. 


Please continue to practice our Water Cycle Song at home so that students will be very familiar with the words. We have changed the tune a tiny bit but it's still good to follow along with the video! The video and lyrics are on last week's blog post. 

Social Studies

This week we enjoyed learning more about the Acadians and Meteghan, Nova Scotia! We learned more about the landscape, animals, transportation, natural resources, activities and more. We recorded some of this information in a mind map in our visual sketchbooks. We will continue adding to this page as we learn more! 


PE
We finished up our gymnastics unit with Mission Impossible! The students had a great time sneaking through the course and searching for letters to create a mystery word. We will have one week of regular gym before starting Sound Kreations dance in May.

Sports Day

We are so excited to be able to host a Lake Bonavista School Sports Day in 2024! Sports Day will be taking place on Friday, May 24th from 9:00am – 11:50am, the end of day dismissal time will stay the same (12:15pm). Students will participate in a variety of sports activities in the school field and will end the day watching the Second Annual Teachers VS. Grade 6 Kickball Game! Parent Council has generously provided a small snack for all students to enjoy during their outdoor time. Please pack an additional snack for your child to eat prior to heading outside for the day.

Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Wear athletic clothing and shoes
  • Pack a water bottle and snack (we will have two snacks this day)
  • Please apply sunscreen and bug spray before arriving to school
  • We will be moving forward with Sports Day unless there are thunderstorms, please dress accordingly

Sports Day Volunteers Needed! 

We are seeking volunteers for our LBS 2024 Sports Day! We are looking for parents who would be comfortable co-leading (with support from a teacher) a sports day activity. This year, sports day is happening on Friday, May 24, 2024 from 9:00am – 12:10pm. If you’re available to join us please email your child's teacher. Please note that a valid police clearance is required to volunteer.

Hello families,  We had a very busy week getting ready for our winter concert and our Calgary Humane Society fundraiser! Students love baking and packaging treats, making posters, and some students were even challenged to learn how to curl the ribbon! On Friday we used our skip counting skills to count up all the money we've raised so far. We've raised $666.85 and are hoping to break our record of $700 from last year! All of this work is connected to our health and wellness curriculum (volunteerism), social studies, science, art, math and literacy! Wow! Math In math we've been continuing to work with number bonds. This week students learned how to determine the missing number in a number bond when given the whole and one of the parts. This is a pre-cursor to subtraction! September 3-6

Hello families,  Here's our weekly update!  In September we are focusing on building community in our classroom, getting to know each other, and learning classroom routines and expectations. I can tell the biggest thing we need to work on is noise level! 😅 We read the story "We Don't Eat our Classmates" and talked about treating other people the way we want to be treated. Students had fun doing a step-by-step drawing of a T-rex!  We also learned about calendars and completed a calendar activity for September. Grade 2 students labelled each day and wrote the special days in September. Grade 1s could choose a calendar template where they wrote their own numbers to 30 or traced the numbers to 30. They were then asked to colour their calendar in a pattern as I wanted to see what they know about patterns already. Hello families,  Here's our weekly update!  Reminders Sound Kreations dance forms came home this week. Please return them as soon as possible! 😊 Home Reading folders will start on Monday for those who expressed interest - thanks for your patience!  Thank you to everyone who offered to volunteer for the grade 1/2 art blocks. We have all the volunteers we need now!  An email was sent earlier this week about some online sessions regarding speech and reading. RSVP by Friday, April 19th. Science & Social Studies This week we've been enjoying learning more about water! Our sharing assembly on the 30th will be all about water and Earth Day! We learned that not everyone has access to clean drinking water and we came up with ways to conserve water for Earth Day. Students made posters to share with the rest of the school. Earth Day is on Monday, April 22nd! We also made some water inspired art that will be in the display case near the front office.  For our assembly we are learning
