June 10-14

Hello families,

Here's our weekly update!

Math

In math this week we did a summative assessment for shapes to check for students' understanding. During opening task, students have been working on sorting 2D and 3D shapes using their own sorting rules.

We then started learning about fractions! In grade 1, students are learning about halves. In grade 2, students are learning about numerators and denominators, and dividing shapes into equal parts. We've been using some of our Montessori materials to help us with these concepts including the Fraction Skittles and the Fraction Circles.

Literacy

This week we had a lot of fun learning about Reader's Theatre! One group did an example for us, and now all students are working in groups preparing a Reader's Theatre performance. I sent scripts home for student that want to practice - please send them back on Monday!

In UFLI we learned: ew, ui, ue - we started learning about au and aw but ran out of time and will continue this next week!

Here are our words for next week - our final list of words!!

Social Studies

Students wrote about what type of community they would prefer to live in after hearing the story of The City Mouse and The Country Mouse.

We've also been learning about landmarks! We looked at famous landmarks around the world, famous Canadian landmarks, and landmarks in Calgary! Next week we will go on a community walk to find landmarks in Lake Bonavista!

Science

This week students are SUPER excited to learn some coding skills. This is part of our new science curriculum in the Computer Science unit. We learned how to use the Blockly app and the Dash robots (dot and dash). Thanks to Ms. Gierl's class for teaching us on Thursday! When students used them on Friday, this went much more smoothly. We were really impressed with students' ability to debug problems and work together to code the robots!
