Hello families, 

Here's our weekly update! 

This week we finished up all of our government assessments - phew! 😅 This was a lot of our math work this week! 

We enjoyed starting our week learning about the Autumn season and enjoying the nice weather! We went to the garden for a sit-spot and sketched signs of Autumn. Students enjoyed drawing (and labelling for grade 2s!) their favourite things about fall time! 


 

 



We also learned about Orange Shirt Day this week and talked about why it is important to honour the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Students brainstormed words for how kids would feel at residential schools and how we should feel at school today and recorded these in their sketch books. Many students are still working on this activity. We also watched an episode of Molly of Denali called "Grandpa's Drum" which is a heartwarming story about residential skills. 

 




 

In literacy, we reviewed the letters "I" and "N" with the characters Ichabod Ichthyosaurus and Nellie Newt. Ask you child about the actions for I and N. Check out these decodable passages that use the letters and heart words we have reviewed!

In math, we continued on with our government assessments including learning about open number lines! We also collected data about our classroom birthdays and students created a bar graph to show the data. We enjoyed playing some of the math games we've learned so far this year! 



 


We talked a bit about boundaries this week and the importance of setting and respecting boundaries. Students LOVE this catchy song about boundaries! We'll continue this learning next week. 


During Opening Task this week, we were practicing excellent colouring skills! We talked about colouring in the lines, covering the white space, and practicing using realistic and creative colours.

Hello families,  We had a very busy week getting ready for our winter concert and our Calgary Humane Society fundraiser! Students love baking and packaging treats, making posters, and some students were even challenged to learn how to curl the ribbon! On Friday we used our skip counting skills to count up all the money we've raised so far. We've raised $666.85 and are hoping to break our record of $700 from last year! All of this work is connected to our health and wellness curriculum (volunteerism), social studies, science, art, math and literacy! Wow! Math In math we've been continuing to work with number bonds. This week students learned how to determine the missing number in a number bond when given the whole and one of the parts. This is a pre-cursor to subtraction! September 3-6

Hello families,  Here's our weekly update!  In September we are focusing on building community in our classroom, getting to know each other, and learning classroom routines and expectations. I can tell the biggest thing we need to work on is noise level! 😅 We read the story "We Don't Eat our Classmates" and talked about treating other people the way we want to be treated. Students had fun doing a step-by-step drawing of a T-rex!  We also learned about calendars and completed a calendar activity for September. Grade 2 students labelled each day and wrote the special days in September. Grade 1s could choose a calendar template where they wrote their own numbers to 30 or traced the numbers to 30. They were then asked to colour their calendar in a pattern as I wanted to see what they know about patterns already. Hello families,  Here's our weekly update!  Reminders Sound Kreations dance forms came home this week. Please return them as soon as possible! 😊 Home Reading folders will start on Monday for those who expressed interest - thanks for your patience!  Thank you to everyone who offered to volunteer for the grade 1/2 art blocks. We have all the volunteers we need now!  An email was sent earlier this week about some online sessions regarding speech and reading. RSVP by Friday, April 19th. Science & Social Studies This week we've been enjoying learning more about water! Our sharing assembly on the 30th will be all about water and Earth Day! We learned that not everyone has access to clean drinking water and we came up with ways to conserve water for Earth Day. Students made posters to share with the rest of the school. Earth Day is on Monday, April 22nd! We also made some water inspired art that will be in the display case near the front office.  For our assembly we are learning
