September 9-13

We had another great week in room 11! Our first five day week of the year! Here's what we got up to!

We are continuing to practice our inside voices (close-talking voices). We enjoyed reading the story "My Mouth is a Volcano."

We also learned what it means to follow the "group plan." This is a strategy from Occupational Therapists for students to understand and demonstrate expected behaviours. The program, Social Explorers, is designed to develop social thinking. Specifically, it develops awareness of self, awareness of others, and the impact of our actions on others' feelings and thoughts. The term Group Plan is the expected behaviours and routines. Students are learning how to identify the group plan and join in with their bodies and thinking.

In the mornings, students have been introduced to Opening Task. This is a short, familiar activity that students complete after soft entry. The activity may change depending on what we are learning in the classroom. This week, students were asked to choose a set of numbers and show those numbers in any way (picture, tally marks, base ten, tens frames, etc.) In the morning, once their opening task is completed, students have time to finish up any unfinished work or they are able to move on to a responsible work choice if all of their work is completed.

Gr. 2 Student Example

We talked more about what makes our school special and different from other schools as we are a Montessori school. We talked about Work Period and what it means to choose a Responsible Work Choice when our work is finished. Students are still working on choosing appropriate work choices that are not distracting for their classmates and are practicing working by themselves or with one other person.

We learned about the story of Maria Montessori and how Montessori schools came to be. Maria Montessori was the first female in Italy to become a doctor! We worked together to brainstorm words about Maria Montessori and students recorded some words in their sketch books. We also enjoyed listening to a song about Dr. Montessori!

As we continue to explore stories and the stories of the students in room 11, students were asked to share some of their likes and dislikes. Gr 2 students also had to label their work!

In literacy this week, we continued learning about the letter M. S, and T. We met the Animated Literacy characters Mimi Mermaid, Sadie Seal, and Timmy Tiger and Terrible Tommy T-Rex. Ask your child about the sounds and actions for each character! Here are some digital resources we love!

We learned how to effectively buddy read this week! We're working on building our buddy reading stamina. Students were able to focus on buddy reading for 10 minutes before getting distracted and losing focus.

We learned another math game called Skunk! You can play this game (and make ten in last week's blog) at home! We played that each person/team can roll up to 3 times in each round. The math gets a little tricky when adding your score together so we used the Montessori Coloured Bead Bars to help us!

This week we read one of my favourite stories "Do Unto Otters." This story teaches the golden rule - do unto otters (others) as you would have otters do unto you" (i.e. treat other people the way you want to be treated!) We brainstormed ways that classmates should treat each other and students make their own otters! You can see our otters during the Open House next Thursday!
