Tuesday, Wednesday AND Thursday

Hi Everyone!

Sorry for the lack of blog posts this week - here is an update on some of the things we've been up to!

On Tuesday, we spent a lot of time outside. We did a Spring scavenger hunt with Miss Ireland's class, spent our gym time outside skipping, and went outside at the end of the day to play a communication game called 4 up. In this game, everyone stands in a circle and only 4 people can be standing at a time. You cannot speak or point but have to switch who is standing and sitting. We learned a lot of ways to communicate non-verbally.

On Wednesday, we did an experiment about sinking and floating. Students were surprised to learn that a snap cube floats! We also tested a cork, marble, empty juice box, pencil, popsicle stick, and an item of their choice. In gym we went outside again (it's too nice not to!!) Students had the choice of skipping or using the scoops. At the end of the day we did another communication activity using pattern blocks. In partners, one student would create a design with the blocks and cover it with a privacy folder. They then had to describe the pattern to their parter and see if their partner could create the exact same design.

Today, we went to the AM Kindergarten Spring Concert rehearsal in the morning. We have been focusing in on writing and the idea of complete sentences. We discussed how a sentence needs a subject and predicate and began talking about nouns, pronouns, proper nouns, verbs and punctuation. Students in grade 2 are also expected to start adding adjectives to their writing! We have also been talking about the importance of writing neatly and using proper capitals in order to ensure we can communicate effectively through writing. This afternoon we started talking about "Genius Hour." Genius Hour (or sometimes called Passion Projects) is a time where students can choose anything they want to learn about (I shouldn't have said that because now someone wants to learn more about me!) Students will have approximately 1 hour per week to work on their Genius Hour research and presentations. We will be using books from the library as well as the PebbleGO website. Ask you child what they decided to research! Here are the videos we watched about Genius Hour.

At the end of the day today students went to music! Tomorrow there will be a meeting for students interested in Guitar Club - see the note below!

Guitar Club

LBS is excited to start up Guitar Club for the month of May! Guitar Club is for students in Grade 2-6 that have some experience with a guitar and are interested in learning some new skills. We will be able to invite 10 students to join and thanks to our LBS school council, we will be renting 10 guitars from Long and McQuade making this club free of charge! Guitar Club will be Mondays and Wednesdays at lunch from May 2nd-May 30th. We will need students to be dedicated to this club, meaning if they are at school, they will be attending every Monday and Wednesday at lunch. Any interested students can come to a meeting at lunch time on Friday, April 27th to learn more about this opportunity.

If you have any questions you can email Mr. Zac Link (zalink@cbe.ab.ca) or Ms. Lauren Midgley (lemidgley@cbe.ab.ca)
