February 1-5

Hello families and Happy February!

This week we finally finished up our Winter Animal Self-Portraits! I will share the final products on Google Classroom next week for you to see since they include student faces.

Students also enjoyed learning about Groundhog Day this week, and had fun making predictions about whether or not the groundhog would see it's shadow. I sure hope he was wrong about 6 more weeks of winter!

In math, students enjoyed playing a game of Jeopardy! We had a lot of fun, and of course listened to the Jeopardy music.

We also started a math problem solving project where students are working in partners to solve open ended math problems. Each group got different questions and students are continuing to find as many answers as they can. I created exemplars to show students (I forgot to take photos!) and students were given a checklist to ensure they included everything. Here is some of the progress so far! This will be an activity that we do again to help students improve their mathematical reasoning, organization and teamwork! Our first day of teamwork was a little bit rough with lots of silliness, but our second day was much more focused and productive!

On Thursday afternoon, we enjoyed some time learning from the land outdoors. We were lucky enough to have beautiful weather! Each teacher lead a different activity and students travelled in class groups to participate in each activity. Ms. Wuetherick and I led a sharing circle and interactive story. We talked about the significance of a sharing circle and that we use a circle so we can all see and hear each other. It is difficult for us to do this in the classroom this year. We used Mrs. Green's talking stick and took turns thanking Mother Earth for many different things. Each child in our class chose to participate and shared very sweet and thoughtful ideas. Several students were thankful for the snow, the moon, and the trees for all that they provide us. We then read a story called "The Rainbow Crow" which is a story from the Lenape Indigenous people. This story talked about the Creator and we had a discussion about different beliefs that we may hold about how the world came to be and what brought us here. Students did different actions every time they heard certain key words from the story.

Mrs. Green lead a smudge and walk alongside with her group and Ms. Brown's student teacher, Mr. Mix, lead a sit-spot where students imagined the different views they may see from their sit-spot during different seasons. Students also enjoyed playing in the snow and running around! Our expert, Lynne, also joined us to lead the smudge and play her Native American Flute. I didn't get a photo of her flute but I will share a similar one below, as well as some audio I took of her playing.

Today we did a huge cubby clean and reorganization. Students were given new bags for all of their school supplies and they did an awesome job sorting their belongings into recycle, put away, or take home. There has been a lot of paper hoarding in the cubbies and I am happy to have a fresh start for next week. Today we also said goodbye to our student teacher Ms. Wuetherick, with the help of our music teacher, Mrs. Proctor, we were able to gift Ms. Wuetherick a "Reference Letters" book written by the students and a canvas with all of their handprints and names on it. We have enjoyed having her and will miss her a lot!
