February 22-26

Hello families!

I've been reflecting a little bit this week and realized how disconnected I am feeling from all of the families this year. It is difficult to not see you all on a regular basis! Please know that I am always here if you need a chat. You do not have to wait until formal conferences if you have any questions or concerns. I hope that you are all doing well and taking care of yourselves as best as possible during this time!

This week we focused on words from the "-et" family. We read a poem called "My New Pet."

In math, we continued learning about subtraction through games and fact practice. We also continued talking about estimation and Mrs. Rooney set up some "Estimation Stations" throughout the week for students to participate in.

This week we also talked a lot about kindness and bullying. Students compared two apples that looked exactly the same on the outside. We spoke kind words to one apple, and unkind words to the other apple. The students were not happy with Mrs. Rooney when she asked them to say unkind things to one of the apples. When they were cut open, we could see the one we spoke kindly to was fresh and crisp, and the one we spoke unkindly to was bruised and brown. We discussed how being unkind can affect people and how we may not realize it from the outside. We then brainstormed kind words to describe our friends and classmates and wrote kind words about each student in their apple.

We watched some videos about Pink Shirt Day and learned how it started. We read the story "One" by Kathryn Otoshi and sorted scenarios into bullying or unkind. Students also designed their own Pink Shirt Day T-shirts.

We talked about key words such as: bullying, upstander, injustice and respect. Students also designed their own t-shirts for Pink Shirt Day. I know I've said it before, but these students are so empathetic and much more insightful and thoughtful then we sometimes give them credit for.

In phys. ed. we have been enjoying some catching and throwing games. We've played tic-tac-toe and Ants in your Pants.

In social studies, we have started learning about mapping. A mysterious map was found on Mrs. Rooney's desk but it only had an "x" and was difficult to read. Once we added details of our classroom, students were able to locate where the "x" was and found a hidden envelope giving them a PJ Day! We still haven't figure out where this map came from!

On Thursday, students looked at a map of our school yard and created a map using shapes.

Next week we will be starting an Artist in Residency program with Mindfulness expert Amber Pavey. If you missed her parent session, a recorded version will be available soon!
