March 15-19

Hello families,

This week we continued learning about the different Canadian provinces. We learned about Ontario, Quebec, Newfoundland and Labrador, and New Brunswick.

This week we focused on words from the "-in" word family and learned a poem called "A Fish Who Grins." Students liked this one so much that some decided to act it out which was very fun to watch. Students were able to write about their weekends, or what they would do if they spent the weekend at the school. Students worked hard to use the editing checklist to improve their work!

In math, we continued to work on Fact Families and students have been doing a "Problem of the Day" (POD) to improve our understanding of the relationships between addition and subtraction! We also had a St. Patrick's Day "Estimation Station" where students estimated how many coins were in the jar. On Friday, we started talking about addition and subtraction word problems and we will be continuing this next week.

This week we were practicing a "Minute to Win It" challenge called "Riding the Rails" where students had to work with a partner using pool noodles to carry different types of balls to the frisbee. On Monday successfully delivered 33 balls and after practicing all week, on Friday we were able to deliver 47 balls. We went outside as much as possible to practice since the weather was so nice this week!

On Wednesday afternoon, students did a St. Patrick's Day STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Challenge. Lucky the Leprechaun was also up to no good at LBS...

On Wednesday we enjoyed our second mindfulness session with Mrs. Pavey. We reviewed the "Anchor Breathing" and learned about "Rainbow Breathing" and "Sensory Reset." The Sensory Reset is one of my favourite mindfulness practices. This involves thinking and saying to yourself 5 things that you see, 5 things you hear, and 5 things you feel. You can repeat this as many times as you need. I highly suggest trying it out!

We've been doing Daily 5 Literacy groups once or twice every day. On Thursday, since it was so nice out, we tried doing mindfulness and Daily 5 outside.
