March 22-26

Hello families!

We had a busy week and completed a lot of fun learning activities! Prepare for a lot of photos!

In science, we started talking about colour mixing. We tried the "Walking Waters" experiment, created secondary and tertiary colours using Playdoh and used paint to make tints and shades!

In social studies, we continued developing our geographical thinking skills. We continued learning about the rest of the Canadian provinces and territories. We learned about Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Yukon Territories, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut. We watched the Canada Road Trip series for each province and territory. In addition, we watched a video about life in Iqaluit and we watched a throat singing performance by an Inuit band called The Jerry Cans. We have plans to make our own classroom flag and classroom Land Acknowledgment after Spring Break.

Our "Minute to Win It" challenge this week was called "Pool Sharks." Students had to lay on their stomachs and use a small pool noodle to shoot balls into hula hoops. I think this one was the most difficult challenge so far!

In math, we continued learning about word problems. We talked about the key words to look for that will help us determine whether we need to add or subtract. The trickiest one is "How many more?" as this sounds like addition vocabulary, but is actually asking you to find out the difference between two numbers. We will continue this work after the break!

We also talked about sorting items based on attributes. Students worked with a partner to sort emojis based a variety of characteristics.

On Friday, we had so much fun with our Art & Dress Up Day! I think we owe a huge thank-you to Mrs. Rooney for planning and organizing this fun day! We had fun dressing like artists and loved all of the students' outfits and costumes! (The teachers also got a little sweet treat to celebrate Spring Break!)

Our first art activity was building images and designs using natural materials.

Our second art activity was using vegetables and paint to create patterns. We reviewed what patterns are and how to determine pattern rules. It was so interesting to see what designs the different vegetables made! Students also had fun experimenting with mixing their paint colours to create new colours, including tints and shades.

Our last art activity was reviewing 2D shapes and using the Montessori Metal Insets and Geometric Cabinet to trace different overlapping shapes. Students that created different lines and designs in each shape.

I hope everyone has a great Spring Break! We will see you back on Tuesday, April 6th!

Hi Grade 1/2 parents/guardians

We are planning an Easter Egg Hunt on Tuesday, April 6, the first day we return from spring break. Students will be using a map to find laminated “eggs” that will be located at different locations at the green space, north of the school, and on the school grounds. The activity makes connections to the social studies curriculum: students will use familiar landmarks and places in the community to understand a map and locate the eggs; use critical thinking to solve problems; use social skills including cooperation, conflict resolution and consensus building; and they will demonstrate skills of oral, written and visual literacy. We are excited to make connections to the land and our community in this fun event.

Please make sure your child has appropriate outdoor clothing as the activity will take about 1 hour to complete. If you have any questions, please contact me.
