April 12-16

Hello families,

This week we continued to learn about our chick eggs and watch them grow. We enjoyed candling the eggs to see if they are growing. Some of them appear to be growing and some we could tell were not growing much.

For our physical education Minute To Win It challenge this week, we did an activity called "Flippin' Cones." where students had to flip a smaller cone and and have it land on a larger cone. This was very challenging! On Monday, as a class, we only got 3 cones on in a minute, but today we got 7 cones on!

This week we have also been working on creating our very own classroom Land Acknowledgement. We started by going outdoors and thinking about what part of the land we connected with the most. Students then wrote their ideas on a sticky note and we grouped them by common themes. Each table group was responsible for writing a sentence based on the topic they were given (smell, animals, air, earth and trees). We then put the sentences together and talked about the importance of acknowledging the Treaty 7 land and how we not only connected with land, but also each other.

Today we also revisited the story "When We Were Alone" and discussed the idea of Residential Schools at an age appropriate level. The students were so thoughtful and very invested in the conversation and the idea of reconciliation. We wanted students to understand that we are continuing to right our wrongs and creating a land acknowledgement and learning about our history, is a great step towards reconciliation.

We will be practicing reading the land acknowledgement and will put together a video of students reading the acknowledgement next week! We can't wait to see it all come together!

In math, we continue to work on solving word problems and showing our answers using pictures, words and numbers. Each day we have had a Problem of the Day (POD) where students can choose the numbers they would like to work with! Students are improving on their ability to show and explain their thinking clearly.

Virtual Field Trip

On Monday, April 19th, students in grade 1/2 at Lake Bonavista School will participate in an Arts Commons Virtual Arts Education Program, connecting with artist-in-residence Shirley Hill to learn about Blackfoot language and storytelling: https://artscommons.ca/learn-engage/school-programs/artist-in-residence/ This program enriches student learning within our Language Arts and Social Studies curriculum.

Thank you to our Lake Bonavista School Council for generously providing the funding for this experience.
