April 19-23

Hello families!

This week we started our week with a virtual field trip through the Arts Commons with Elder Shirley Hill. The students really enjoyed this session. We learned about Indigenous culture, music and dancing. We saw a video of Elder Shirley hoop dancing and got to dance in the classroom ourselves. We talked about the buffalo jump, language and got to ask her some of our questions!

This week we also worked on finishing our classroom land acknowledgement! This took a lot of work this week! Students worked in partners or a group of three to practice reading their sentence fluently and make up actions. We learned a little bit of sign language to incorporate as well! I unfortunately can't share this video with you but will be making another version with student voices and images without faces to share with you!

In math, we started talking about measurement. As a class, we brainstormed what we knew about measurement by thinking about - What is measurement? and What can we measure? We then watched a video which helped to further our understanding of measurement. In grade 1 and 2, students do not need to learn to measure with specific units, but rather non-standard units of measurement.

We started by ordering some pencil crayons from shortest to longest in partners. Students then combined their pencil crayons and sorted 12 with their table group. On Friday, we reviewed the rules for measurement (in the video above) and students worked in partners to measure each others' height with a non-standard measurement tool. Some of the photos make the measuring look inaccurate because of the angle the picture was taken at, but we did our best to be as precise as possible.

This week we also celebrated Earth Day! We discussed the 3 R's: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle - and discussed ways that we can take care of the Earth every day. We also talked about seed germination and are testing out germinating a variety of different seeds! Our 5 student teacher's also organized a whole school celebration of how we care for the land.

We are getting close to our expected chick hatching day! On Tuesday, we candled our eggs to see if they were going. It appeared that 10/12 eggs were growing, so we took two out.

Today after school, Mrs. Rooney and I candled the eggs one final time. We took out 2 more eggs that were not growing, to make room for the eggs that will hatch, so we now have 8 eggs left. We aren't sure that all of them will hatch, so we will have to wait and see! We also took out the automatic egg turner and spread the eggs out in their own space.

We've also been working on some mini art projects that will eventually be turned into the life cycle of a chicken. Today we created the adult chicken! Here are a few!

Today we also combined all of our Minute To Win It challenges into one huge challenge! It was a lot of fun!
