April 6-9

Hello families,

I hope you all had a nice Spring Break! We had a busy week back at school!

On Tuesday we had a surprise for students! We are in the process of incubating chicken eggs! I usually have my partner in crime, Mrs. Ireland, to help with this process, but this is the first time I am attempting it without her! In the past we have hatched both chicken and duck eggs, and unfortunately last year we weren't able to do this because of school closures. So, we are very excited to have this experience this year!

We have 12 chicken eggs in our incubator but are not expecting all of them to hatch. Students are learning about the needs of animals and how to care for living things. We learned how the incubator works similar to a mother hen by keeping the eggs safe and warm, and flipping them regularly to ensure they are warm on every side. Each day we are learning about how the chicks are developing, and next week we will be able to candle the eggs to actually see the chicks growing inside!

For some reason this photo only shows 9 degrees, but it is actually 99.5 degrees F inside with the humidity level between 50-55%!

On Tuesday, students had a lot of fun outdoors using maps of the schoolyard/community to find 8 Easter eggs. It was a beautiful day to get outside!

In Social Studies, we are continuing to learn about the importance of Land Acknowledgments. Students learned about Cree artist, George Littlechild. We looked at his artwork and created our own art inspired by him. Students used edited photos of themselves that looked like line drawings, but some students chose to draw themselves. Students drew 4 pictures of ways that they feel connected to the land in their backgrounds. I can't share too many photos because they have students faces, but here are a few of students who drew themselves.

In math, we have continued to work on addition and subtraction word problems, and how to show our thinking using pictures, words and numbers. Specifically, we have been showing our work using a picture, ten frames, number lines, math equations, and ending with a complete sentence. This week we also had our monthly Class Dojo store.

This week we focused on words from the "-ip" word family. We thought it would be fun to write our own poem as a class. Here is what we came up with!

Chip Dip

There once was a chip

who lived in dip.

He skipped all around

and the dip tipped over.

He did a flip in the air

and landed on a lip. CRUNCH!

Students also wrote about what they did over the break. We are continuing with our Daily 5 literacy time every day, and sometimes twice/day. Groups were adjusted a little bit and students have been doing a great job working independently and collaboratively on their activities.

In phys ed, we have been continuing with our Minute to Win It challenges. This week we did a challenge called "Fill the Bucket" where students worked with a partner to bounce a ball on the ground and into a bucket as many times as they could in a minute. I think this was the hardest challenge yet!

Virtual Field Trip

On Monday, April 19th, students in grade 1/2 at Lake Bonavista School will participate in an Arts Commons Virtual Arts Education Program, connecting with artist-in-residence Shirley Hill to learn about Blackfoot language and storytelling: https://artscommons.ca/learn-engage/school-programs/artist-in-residence/ This program enriches student learning within our Language Arts and Social Studies curriculum.

Thank you to our Lake Bonavista School Council for generously providing the funding for this experience.

Are you moving or not returning to LBS in September 2021?

If your children are in Kindergarten or Grades 1 to 5 and moving to a new school or not returning to LBS, please complete the Google Form as soon as possible.  Our school is nearly filled to capacity and we have students on the waiting list for the Montessori Program.  Also, as we prepare for the next year, we will know how to balance class sizes as accurately as possible.
