April 11-14

Hello families,

This week we have really been focusing on being kind, responsible, respectful and safe. We've reviewed these expectations each day and have been working hard to make sure our classroom is running smoothly. I compared our classroom to a machine that only works when everyone is doing their part to follow classroom and school expectations. I have let students know that if they are not demonstrating these four things, they will lose the opportunity to make work choices for themselves - they have to show responsibility to gain responsibilities! I've compared this to showing that we are ready for grade 2 and that classroom behaviour and how we treat others is more important in showing they are ready, than how they are at reading, writing or math. I think we're making progress... slowly but surely!

Volunteering

I am still on the hunt for someone to volunteer to help with a few odd jobs around the classroom maybe next week. I just need help with a few little (kind of tedious) tasks such as repairing game/puzzle boxes, organizing puzzle map pieces, etc. Please send me an email if you're interested in helping out! We are also hoping to organize some field trips for the spring time, so if you are interested in volunteering for that, please make sure your clearance is up to date 😊

This week we have continued to look at maps. We are working on a "Me on the Map" book and talked about the continent and country we live in. This is pretty abstract for students but we're really just focusing on basic mapping skills and understanding that maps can represent many different things! We will continue with the book next week by looking at the province and city we live in.

In science, we read the story "What if you had Animal Feet?" We looked at both webbed feet and animal claws as structural adaptations and students sketched the different types of feet.

In math students were given a challenge of completing mixed addition and subtraction. They have been so persistent when going back to try questions again and are getting lots of practice!

For Easter, we learned how to draw an Easter bunny and painted it with water colour. We did the drawing step by step with a practice drawing first. The students brought them home today. Today we also worked with our buddy class to make an Easter memory game!
