April 4-8

Hello families,

This week students were so excited to start buddies! It's been quite a long time since we've been able to do activities with an older buddy class at school. We have buddied up with Ms. Gierl's grade 4/5 class. On Monday, students met their buddies and did some buddy reading together. On Friday, we had a picnic snack outside with our buddies and enjoyed some time playing together.

In math we've continued to learn about subtraction and some different strategies for solving subtraction problems. Last week we used materials and pictures and this week students learned how to use a number line (rulers make great number lines!) and we talked a little bit about counting back.

During our Daily 5 Literacy time, we worked with the "-in" word family!

This week we also started learning some mapping basics. I showed students this photo and they were pretty quick to figure out that it is a map of our classroom. Throughout the week we learned about legends, the compass rose, and using landmarks on a map. Students worked in a small group to use shapes to build a map of the classroom and they made their own treasure maps!

In science, we have been looking at animal's structural adaptations. We started with looking at the different types of teeth that animals have. We read the story, "What if you had Animal Teeth?" and students had to choose which type of teeth they would want to have and why. They wrote about their choice and drew themselves with these animal teeth.

Students brought home their library books this week! We have library every Wednesday morning, so books should be returned on or before Wednesday. Students can keep their books for up to 2 weeks but can exchange them after 1 week. If students wish to keep books beyond 2 weeks, they should be returned to school to be renewed.

Today we discussed how to be responsible with the library books (i.e. Being gentle, keeping them in a safe place, not losing them, etc.) If books are damaged or lost, there will be a cost to replace them. We are so excited to finally be sending library books home again for students to enjoy with their families!

Students are bringing home April calendars today to help them remember when we have library and other special days!
