April 19-22

Hello families,

This week in math we learned about equalities and inequalities. Students learned this new concept with numbers under 10 and then extended it to addition and subtraction to 20 by searching for problems around the classroom!

We also continued to work on our "Me on the Map" books and learned a little more about our country and province. We will continue this learning next week. Students also put their mapping skills to the test during an Easter Egg mapping hunt. We originally had this planned for last Thursday but the snow ruined our plans a bit so we ended up doing it on Wednesday afternoon. Students had to read the map to find the Easter eggs and then copy the correct design once they found each egg.

In Science, we continued our learning about animal's structural adaptations. We learned about bird beaks and the many different and interesting ways in which they work. Students compared our mouths with bird beaks using a Venn Diagram.

In literacy we learned about the "-ing" ending. During Daily 5 literacy time, students worked with the "ing" family. Students will be bringing an "ing" poem home on Friday.

To celebrate Earth Day, we worked with our grade 4/5 buddy class to make posters for the school to teach LBS students different ways they can help keep the Earth clean.

Thank you to everyone who has volunteered for our upcoming learning experiences! I believe I now have enough volunteers for the zoo but I'm still looking for more volunteers for our in-class field trip from Teacher's Pet on Thursday June 2nd from 12:30-2:45. Please let me know if you're interested!

Gymnastics

We will begin gymnastics in our regularly scheduled gym classes on Monday, April 25th.  The gymnastics unit will last two weeks.  Safety routines, cooperation and sportsmanship are taught and reviewed in each class.

This physical activity opportunity will help students acquire individual skills through a variety of developmentally appropriate movement activities.

It is important for students to come to school prepared for being actively engaged. The following guidelines are very helpful…

Head ....................... long hair pulled back

Ears/Throat/Wrist ............... jewellery off

Shirt.................................. one layer shirt

Waist ................................................tucked in

Pants.........................sporty pants or shorts, no belts or zippers
