May 2-6

Hello families!

It was a VERY busy week!

This week we started the 30 by 30 challenge which was started by the David Suzuki Foundation. It is now called the "One Nature Challenge" but apparently I didn't get the memo so we are still calling it 30x30! We have been collecting photos from all of our outdoor activities this week! If you choose to continue spending 30 minutes outside each day this weekend (I know it's not supposed to be very nice but I'm sure we can still do it!) feel free to email me a photo and I can include it on our calendar! Here are some photos from our outside time this week!

On Monday, we read a story about clouds and did some cloud watching to sketch what we saw in the clouds. We were even lucky enough to see a rainbow!

On Tuesday, we had a skipping lesson from some of the 4/5 students in Ms. Mumford's class!

On Wednesday, to celebrate Hats on for Mental Health, we had some fun outside together getting fresh air (but unfortunately no sunshine) and listened to some music while we did some chalk art! It was a lot of fun... I haven't used sidewalk chalk in quite awhile!

On Thursday, we went outside with Mrs. Green's class and read a story called Everybody Needs a Rock which gave us 10 rules for finding the perfect rock. Students then explored the school yard to find their special rock. Students then sketched their rock and added labels to describe the size, colour and texture.

On Friday, we went outside for our phys ed time with Mrs. Green's class and enjoyed playing with some different equipment! Students could choose frisbee, skipping or playground.

And that's just the 30x30 challenge! 😅

In math, we continued working with equal and unequal equations and we will be moving on to fact families next week!

This week, we were excited to use some Nature Kits from the City of Calgary! We have two nature kits - one from Parkland and one from Sandy Beach. Students looked at several different artifacts, including skulls and animal scat! Students did some wonder mapping where they chose one artifact from each tray to sketch and they wrote the questions they had about the item.

Students comparing the animal skull to a recent story we read about animal teeth to help them determine which animal the skull belongs to!

In literacy we started learning about the "bossy e." We looked at the "-ide" word family and learned that an E on the end of a word can change the vowel sound in the word.

This week we had a couple of special days. We learned a bit about Ramadan and Cinco de Mayo. We also had "Hats on for Mental Health" day and had a really good conversation about mental health. I described mental health to students as taking care of our happiness and brain and not just taking care of our bodies. We talked about it being normal to feel sad or worried or anxious sometimes, but if we feel like this a lot of the time, it's really important to talk to someone about it. We all shared ways that we make ourselves feel better when we are feeling sad or frustrated. We also watched this social story called "Lucy's Blue Day."

This week we also had a lot of fun with gymnastics and finally got to use the Canadian Climber!

Art Card samples came home this week - all of the ordering information is on the inside of the card. I think they turned out very cute!
